      A staunch advocate for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights, Sims became the first openly gay member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and remains one of the most visible Out elected officials in the United States. Prior to his election to public office, Sims served as staff counsel for policy and planning at the Philadelphia Bar Association and also served as both the president of the board of directors of Equality Pennsylvania and as chairman of Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia (GALLOP). A member of the national campaign board of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund until August 2011, Sims continues to lecture regularly about the policy and legal challenges facing diverse and marginalized communities He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsbury University and a Juris Doctor degree in International & Comparative Law from Michigan State University College of Law. He has also been a Fellow at the Center for Progressive Leadership as well as Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Sims is the recipient of the 2014 National Champion of Choice Award from NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the American Bar Association Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity’s national Stonewall Award. He was named a “Top 40 National Leaders Under 40” by the New Leader’s Council (NLC), a “Top 40 National LGBT Leaders Under 40” by The Advocate Magazine, a “Top 25 National LGBT Speakers / Presenters” by Campus Pride, a “Top 40 National LGBT Attorneys Under 40” by the American Bar Association and has been named to the “Out100” most influential openly LGBTQ+ Americans on several occasions.
