I first met Gareth eight years ago when the Faculty Manager brought him to the IT office and introduced me to my new boss. He was my Faculty IT manager for the following eight years and in his stewardship IT Services as a whole and the team he managed have gone through many changes. In this time we've gone from physical servers in cupboards to a virtual infrastructure and storage area network spanning multiple data centres- thanks largely to Gareth providing the direction and securing the funding. He moved onto pastures new the week that Windows 10 was released, giving me the opportunity to look back at how we've transitioned from installing Windows XP from CD and memory stick, via network based build systems which Gareth put together, to a common desktop platform deploying Windows 7 across the University. He was a key player in the SCCM rollout project which aside from providing technological benefits really brought our disparate cross-campus IT Services organisation together. Gareth has always been a pioneer of innovation within IT- supportive of his team trying new technologies, or letting them take time to improve something even if no-one is complaining that it's broken. For example, within IT Services at Surrey we wouldn't have the robust, comprehensive knowledge base we have today without Gareth championing the idea, and things like the SurreySoftware application portal and the Computer Availability site might never have happened if he hadn't allowed his staff the flexibility to explore solutions outside the borders of the Faculty which might benefit IT Services and the University as a whole. The Faculty itself has changed in those 8 years- with academic departments coming and going, structures changing, and new opportunities - such as the new Veterinary Sciences School- being created. Gareth has successfully adapted his IT team to all these changes. The day before Gareth arrived, the IT team in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences had just one FTE. He left behind a strong, balanced, diverse team of 8 ready to take the University of Surrey even further up the league tables.

Taking on a newly created role with the Foundation I am responsible for the management of IT Services, the development of new business management systems and the eventual introduction of a new Assistive Technology Team to deliver the promise of technology in supporting the Foundation’s students, residents and service users live their best lives.Accountable to the Foundation’s Executive, my primary area of work has been leading the transformation of the Foundation’s use of technology in all its activities. This has involved working with the different Education and Care service stakeholders to define and secure executive and trustee support for an ambitious Technology Strategy, creating associated delivery and financial plans, motivating and guiding the professional development of IT and technology staff, and overseeing a series of projects aimed at establishing a secure, fit for purpose IT services and infrastructure that will support the Foundation’s ambitions.Since joining the Foundation I have led a growing IT Team that has successfully navigated a global pandemic while overseeing a dramatic shift towards modern cloud services supporting business operations (including a project selecting and implementing a new SAAS finance system), collaboration (especially the timely adoption of Microsoft 365 in early 2020) and services directly supporting the safety and wellbeing of the Foundation's service users. In the background I have guided a series of projects bring both end-user computer and essential IT infrastructure up to date, and led a significant programme of works aimed at hardening IT systems and protecting the Foundation's data assets. As well as moving away from the incumbent approaches to IT provision at the Foundation which focused on break-fix support and on-premises only services, I have successfully begun to develop in the team a customer focus, through a greater understanding of our staff and beneficiaries, their challenges and their technical needs.

    • Career Break
      • Jul 2018 - Dec 2019

I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to take a short career break, commit some time to family and explore what the future could hold.During this time I rediscovered a love of landscape photography and enjoyed the freedom to roam and snap the Northumberland coast. This turned into the opportunity to join a local arts collective and sell my photos, as well as picking up a number of commissions. While I enjoyed the change of both pace and direction I found I missed working with a team of like-minded people towards a shared and important goal, so after the summer of 2019 I decided it was time to find a new challenge.

Was very well received.2017 Windows 10 Community Day (Manchester) - Organised, hosted and facilitated a one-day workshop looking at deploying Windows 10 in Universities. The event received great feedback and established member organised "Community Days" as a new event format for UCISA.2017 Annual Conference (Bristol) - Joined the conference Org Cttee and built upon the previous year's success to run gamification during the event. Chaired plenary and breakout sessions.2018 GDPR and IT Support Community Day (Manchester) - Organised, hosted and facilitated a one-day workshop exploring the impact of GDPR on IT Support activities. The event received great feedback.2018 Conference (Crewe) - Chairing the conference organising Cttee, taking the lead on the programme's theme and content, securing speakers and working with UCISA staff, group colleagues and exhibitors to put together the event. Opened the conference, chaired plenary sessions, facilitated social activities and delivered a short presentation on the ups and downs of working in Higher Education IT. The event received fantastic feedback and I consider it one of my career highlights."SSG’s remit is to help UCISA members get the most from IT, technology enhanced learning, and computer mediated communication. The SSG aims to identify and share innovative and best practice, and connect and develop the IT support services community."

Led and managed the IT Department for Oxford's largest academic department. Oversaw the development and delivery of IT strategy, working with the IT management team, building relationships with senior colleagues in the Department and collaborating with suppliers both inside and outside the University to translate this into tangible actions.I had responsibility for financial planning and management, including budget planning, negotiating and securing funding, tracking and reporting on expenditure. I successfully lobbied for additional capital funding throughout my tenure that allowed the team to deliver dramatic improvements to web, data management, knowledge management and networking across the Department's nine sites.Recruited, coached and developed what grew to be a very strong team with a reputation for excellent customer service. Led exercises looking at values, objectives and behaviours which helped guide team and individual actions. Through a programme of training and 1-to-1 mentoring introduced elements of Lean to develop a culture of improvement. As a member of the broader University IT community I promoted the Department's position on IT matters through committees, working groups and a network of connections I developed across central, college and department IT functions. I was also a member of UCISA's Support Services Group, acting as an ambassador for Oxford IT and developing valuable connections across Higher Education IT.

Recruited, developed and led a new team with responsibility for delivering research and teaching focused IT services to a large academic and administrative community. I motivated and mentored staff, strengthening the team’s combined abilities. My team frequently contributed to IT activities across the University and was highly respected for the quality of service it provided, as well as its innovative approach to technology and service delivery.Created local and University IT strategy, planning and overseeing implementation. I facilitated this by maintaining short-, medium- and long-term (up to 5 years) operational and financial plans. Managed a range of projects and programmes, including University-wide change programmes overhauling staff and student experience of personal computing equipment. Led a multi-million pound programme of over 20 IT projects associated with establishing Surrey’s new Vet School, delivering digital-first IT resources including personal computing, infrastructure and media services (with the AV provision winning an innovation award). Key to the success of these projects has been my approach to stakeholder engagement, relationship building and communication.Being responsible for service and process performance I instituted several elements of continual service improvement, including technical and service performance monitoring and service management reporting. Through my assessment of the data this has provided, the team was been able deliver excellent levels of service availability and greatly improved our support performance. This impacted favourably on NSS, PRES and Staff Survey results, where we achieved excellent levels of satisfaction with IT.In addition to Faculty responsibilities I was a member of IT's senior leadership team and was responsible for several University-wide IT activities, including chairing the Generic Services Steering Group which led on the provision of user workstation services, data storage and email.
