During my fashion design studies at the HKU I had the privilege of being guided by Nannet. I experienced our conversations as profound and inspiring. Nannet is a great listener and is capable of catching the essence of a concept, even when it was not yet clear to me. She would give me tips, which I could include in my thought proces in my own way. Sometimes I would figure it out right away. Sometimes it took weeks. But always after my own thought proces, which made me truly understand the matter. This way of working has been incredibly valuable for me.

Nannet is one of the few professionals who can translate abstract trends into daily strategy. A concept thinker and a doer in one person. I have used those capacities a couple of times in the past and marvelled at the wit and creativity she brought into our conversation. You can be sure she will come up with practical solutions to difficult problems. Highly recommended.

With her hands-on mentality and a great heart for creativity and culture Nannet is a very inspiring woman to work with. She combines her managerial skills with insights in processes and people, always looking for solutions.

Orchestrating the Voices of the Women of Delft towards a take-over of the museum for #internationalwomensday

PAINTING WITH VOICESHistory is not complete without the perspective of women. Although this speaks for itself, it still does not go without saying. For this reason, the Museum Prinsenhof Delft has directed its Delft perspective at women in 2021. In search of stories of historical women past and present, the museum invited women in Delft to share their personal stories. More than 40 women wrote letters on subjects like love, politics, grief and entrepreneurship. Subjects connecting generations. The letters will become part of the museum’s collection. The stories will thus be preserved for the future. To conclude this year’s theme, the museum invited artist Nannet van der Kleijn to frame the year with a new work of art. Van der Kleijn engaged in a series of conversations with the authors of the letters. She listened to them, involved them in the creative process and asked them to write their own words and say them out loud. The result of this is the installation Painting with Voices.Three hand-printed banners, each 12.5 metres tall, float in the room. The stories immortalized in the installation seem to be entering through the museum’s windows, as it were. The handwriting on the textile and the sound of the voices resonating through the room on the hour express the character of the Delft women and add a new layer of meaning to their stories.Nannet van der Kleijn (1960) describes herself can be described as an ‘architect of dialogue’.Her working method is to follow her intuition. She creates sequences of encounters, influencing and shaping her work, and constantly keeping it in motion. In her work, which is often the result of co-creation, the process is as important as the final outcome. Show less

After more than 30 years working in fashion, design, art, architecture and communication, Nannet van der Kleijn is called an 'architect of dialogue'. With her designs she plays with and responds to movements in society. She likes to observe and see how culture becomes visible and play with elements of it to come to work. Her working method is: “When Form Follows Value, Emotional Design is Created”. Van der Kleijn studied fashion design and works for a variety of fashion and design brands, institutes and institutions, on an employed or project basis, as a designer, design director, art director or developer. As Bodil she (co-)initiated the clothing brand and design community Orson & Bodil. Some not obvious projects: creative director at Siemens Design Lab, involved in the development of interfaces and developer of the uwideevancultuur.nl platform for the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to enable co-creation of cultural education in primary education locally. Active in education, among other things as creative director for AMFI-Amsterdam Fashion Institute, developer of the Form Follows Value curriculum 'RESPECT' at the Design Academy Eindhoven and as a visiting professor at Karlsruhe University of Arts & Design. Recently temporary head of the HKU fashion department. In addition, she has been a board member and co-founder of the Meesteropleiding Coupeur for many years, a foundation that is committed to restoring the quality of tailoring in the Netherlands and offers the profession a safe place with respect for the tailor. Free work enables Nannet to feel the pulse of the time again and again. Her latest work in this is A Celebration of Art – Reflection in Time. Show less

With love for craftsmanship and heart for maintaining employment in this field of working, I support this beautiful institute. I especially support the master apprentice approach. Assignments from theater, opera and ballet companies, from couturiers, musea and the film and fashion industry hold the future of the expertise of costume making in The Netherlands alive. A tailor constructs a first or only piece of garment in any size or size-range. Through specialized education in the making of bespoke clothing, couture, opera, ballet, film and theater costumes and museum replicas, the future of this profession is guaranteed.www.meesteropleidingcoupeur.nlFollow us:https://www.facebook.com/MeesteropleidingCoupeurhttps://www.instagram.com/meesteropleidingcoupeurhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx2rW0mxrYze9yN3nshJbLg Show less

STICHTING MEESTEROPLEIDING COUPEUR Is a foundation established to guarantee the profession of master tailor in the current and future fashion industry. In my role as interim director I made an analysis of the progress and strengths of the course during its 5-year existence, allowing me to formalize operational processes for the business side and the curriculum and help pave the way for the new managing director. Together with the team the insights made possible to combine and manage the resources, skills, stakeholder value and economic relevance in order to guarantee the 'Master Apprentice' status of this profession. AMFI-AMSTERDAM FASHION INSTITUTE - CREATIVE DIRECTOR Is a Fashion Technology Institute bachelor degree and part of IFFTI – International Federation of Fashion Technology Institutes. I was asked to reconnect education with industry. I positioned the school in the context of IFFTI and in doing so inspired the other bachelor's of fashion in NL to do the same with their respected departments. At the same time connection was founded with IAF - International Apparel Foundation. By amalgamating the heritage and provenance of the Charles Montaigne design education and the Meester Koetsier engineering education, with the newly created branding department I used the wealth of AMFI's raison d'etre. I analyzed the rhythm and systems of the bachelor education and matched it with the rhythm of the contemporary fashion industry, programming the curriculum as a ‘Reality School’. The brand and educational minor program INDIVIDUALS was the first creation to reflect the approach and still exists. One of the many positive results is that students are skilled and inspired to match industry demands already during their internship. Show less

The Design Academy teachers teach one day a week next to having their own practice or work experience in a company. I started at the department Man & Leisure with Li Edelkoort and Liesbeth in 't Hout. Later at Man & Well-Being I first worked with Frans de la Haye and Koos Flinterman, later with Ilse Crawford and Stef Bakker. When Li Edelkoort became director she asked me to develop a teaching program based on my way of working for all first year students entering the academy. She named the program RESPECT. That is how my motto Form Follows Value came about enabling autonomous insight and design by students: There is not one way of designing there is only YOUR way. It is then when I started to call my approach Emotional Design. Show less

SIEMENS DESIGN LAB At the research department of Siemens Headquarters in Munich, a group of 10 designers build solutions for interfaces with the quality of face-to face communications. My value-based approach to design was applied as a half-year project, taking place both in Munich and Shanghai at their S-Point office and in collab with Tongji University Design Departement. The results presented to the press gave insight in a 15 year vision and perspectives, generated a lot of free publicity and set parameters for the technical department. Show less

In this B2B Home Textile Company, I created a 'design driven' 'collection oriented' sales appraoch. As a designer I was asked to look into their prints on textile. Instead I was given carte blanche to analyze the company and restructure the showroom as a design center. I trained an employee already working in the company to enhance trend-watching skills. The proactive approach makes that existing private label clients buy wider and deeper into the collection and new clients are found. A contemporary women’s wear collection and fashion development agency established in the same period as the six of Belgium. I am the original Bodil. The crafts approach to industrially made clothing enhancing the humane look & feel created a new context in Dutch fashion. This human centered approach seeps through in all my projects. I apply this attitude to the design industry, education and cultural institutions. From a company driven by industrial possibilities (in the middle east) to a jeans brand rooted in ‘Dutch design aesthetics’ and ‘European make’ culture. Employed by the Head of Sales for Dobber Benelux and working with the styling team at Dobber Stockholm, I changed the visual appeal of the Dobber product range to the kind of products the Benelux Sales team longed for. In this process I could make the Head of Sales clear the limit of possibilities for a design team organized around a Hong Kong office and how a jeans brand can be build starting in the washing machines in Italy. The Head of Sales broke free of the mother brand and started his own company, called G-Star. I was the 'deal breaker' that showed him how to start the denim sourcing and design chain in the fashion industry. Show less
