My doctoral research focused on how environment and behavior are able to "get under the skin" to drive variation in aging and longevity. I used an evolutionary perspective to leverage the power of epigenomics and high performance computing to develop predictive modeling approaches that are more flexible and modular than traditional pipelines for analyzing massive 'omics' datasets. I used these optimized pipelines and models to test questions aimed at uncovering sources of variation in biological aging and how the underlying molecular mechanisms are influenced by inter-individual differences in factors like diet or lifestyle. As an Assistant Instructor in the Bioinformatics and Genomics Master's Program at UO, I led weekly journal clubs to teach students how to dissect and critically evaluate primary scientific literature involving bioinformatic methods and served as an Assistant Teacher for the Advanced Data Analysis in R course. I worked as an Assistant Teacher and Lab Instructor in the Anthropology and Biology Departments, where I independently led lab sections/seminars for more than 1,400 undergraduate students. I typically managed 4 classes of 20 students each per quarter. I supervised lab activities, designed or updated in-class and take-home exercises as necessary, and provided critical feedback for essay assignments. As a Lab Instructor in the Biology Department, I taught students how to carry out empirical research by designing rand conducting experiments related to photosynthesis and transpiration. Students learned to generate testable hypotheses, statistically analyze and interpret data from experimental and control groups, and effectively communicate their findings verbally and in writing, through an oral presentation and additional written report of their results. I derived key insights from anonymized patient data regarding the efficacy of a community health initiative involving over 1000 patients living with asthma. In this role, I designed the methodological approach, performed statistical analyses, and produced data visualizations to summarize main findings, which showed that the outpatient Asthma Education Program improved patient capacity for effective symptom self-management and significantly reduced visits to the Emergency Department. These findings were subsequently used in presentations to hospital executives to demonstrate the cost-saving and public health benefits of these preventative efforts. Show less

I mined electronic health records to select samples suitable for pre-determined research objectives. I perform pre-processing, QC, alignment and methylation calling for next generation sequencing data generated using bisulfite sequencing. I conducted downstream analyses using machine learning approaches and multivariate statistics to build and optimize predictive models to test biological hypotheses related to molecular aging. I held this position as part of a UO-OHSU Collaborative Seed Grant. I mined electronic health records to select samples suitable for pre-determined research objectives.
