What you will find most refreshing about Kevin is his passion for learning. Kevin loves to learn and has an incredible memory to retain the details. I remember watching Kevin in action when we traveled to Honduras on a mission trip several times. We performed manual labor in 100 degree weather. While the rest of us were enjoying a much needed break, we could always find Kevin talking to someone, in Spanish or English, to find out more about the culture, the politics and the lives of the people in the village. I learned more on my trips with Kevin than on all my other trips combined. When Kevin was in high school, I hired him to clean our accounting office. He asked a lot of questions about accounting. Eventually, I asked him if he would like to learn more by bringing my personal accounting records up to date in QuickBooks. Kevin caught on very quickly. He entered transactions and balanced the bank statements. There was one month that he could not get to balance. He told me there was an error in the bank statement. After working for 30 years with entry level accountants, I have heard this before and I knew that it is never an error with the bank statement and it was always an error with accountant. Unfortunately, I explained that to Kevin and he went back to work on balancing. Not long after he came in to my office to show me that he had pinpointed the error on the bank statements. Sure enough, the ending balance of one statement did not agree to the beginning balance of the next. Right then I knew then that Kevin was not only doing the accounting, but understood the concepts behind it, even before he ever took his first accounting course. Since then, Kevin has really embraced college. He demonstrates his maturity and responsibility with his work as a resident assistant. Often he must make the unpopular decisions that are in the best interest of the students, but yet he seems to be one of the most loved and respected resident assistants on campus. While he has been committing an average of 30 hours a week to these duties, he has been attending classes, doing homework and studying to maintain an impressive 3.7 grade point average.
