My research largely involves problems in biomechanics. I am interested in the fluid and solid mechanics, and their interaction in particular, of biological phenomena. The function of the human body depends on many biofluid flows that involve fluid–structure interactions (FSI), including blood flow through arteries and veins, air flow through the respiratory system, and the cerebrospinal fluid circuit integral to the brain and spinal cord, to name but a few. The underlying mechanics may be studied using analogue models such as flow through collapsible tubes, channels and past cantilevered plates, which are also of intrinsic value as canonical instability problems in FSI. Using these, together with patient-specific models, I investigate normal and pathological physiologies with the objective of an improved understanding of biological function.

Project Coordinator

Aug 2017 - Feb 2018
I coordinated the logistics for carrying out a health study on site that investigated the effects of diesel exhaust on the health of underground miners in Western Australia. This involved revising the ethics application, ordering equipment and clinical consumables, developing online surveys using Qualtrics software, creating a participant information presentation, conducting surveys on site, managing a master database, and completing the data entry.

Feb 2017 - Feb 2018
My role was to investigate the effects that the elements of the built environment, such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, acoustics and lighting, have on worker well-being and physical health, which in turn affect productivity. This work sought to quantify such effects on measurable health endpoints in the form of a systematic review. The project contributed to and was funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living as part of Closing the Loop: Development of an Evidence-Based Framework for Low Carbon Design of Non-Residential Buildings.

Jul 2021 - Jan 2023
In this role I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering mobility, exercise and skills programs for clients with long-term/progressive neurological conditions in the community care setting. These programs are conducted in clients’ homes, at gyms, at public swimming pools and out in the community, such as at a skateboard park or the beach. Each program is designed by a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or speech pathologist, with whom I communicate client progression, regression and compliance. I manage my own case load, which includes scheduling sessions, organising equipment, documenting sessions and involving families/support workers. I take on the role as a motivator, adapting communication styles according to client function, interests and personality to ensure each client achieves their life goals within the scope of their NDIS funding.

Dec 2013 - Dec 2016
My primary responsibility was to edit (copy, substantial, rewrite; Word, LaTeX) articles for submission to more than 50 international scientific journals, spanning engineering, mathematics and medicine. Furthermore, I wrote cover letters, journal selection and reviewer recommendation reports, and expert scientific reviews. All tasks were submitted within 48 hr and 72 hr deadlines, and I continuously refined my work through adherence to good writing style. As part of a research project on fishing boats, I was hired to evaluate the efficiency of several designs for the underwater stabilisation fins. I obtained empirical data by carrying out wind tunnel testing of a scale model fin and developed a computer model using the software Fluent for making theoretical predictions. In this role I worked as an independent scientist, reporting planning and progress to the principal investigator. Under the direction of Dr Craig Hardman I developed a prototype online brain atlas using the Java programming language. The program displayed digitised tissue sections and allowed navigation of anatomical structures, serving as a teaching tool. I also performed some cryosections and stained and mounted them onto slides to appreciate the challenges in digital feature quality. This was a small scale project and progress was discussed through informal meetings throughout. During this contract I consolidated my programming knowledge in a commercial setting, realising projects in the C, C++ and Fortran languages. I worked on the Vulcan software package for the mining industry, mostly solving mathematical problems for the spatial planning of open cut mine design. I documented my code according to company guidelines to enable the collaboration between the members of the programming team. Laboratory Assistant
-
Mar 1999 - Dec 2000
This role sparked my interest in applications of engineering in the biomedical sciences and improving quality of life. I worked in the laboratory of Associate Professor Chris Bertram, carrying out experiments that involved fluids flowing through flexible tubes. I was also responsible for wiring up transducers, constructing some of the hydraulic equipment, as well as presenting and analysing the data. This research sought to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between the pressure and flow rate of the fluid and the deformation/collapse of the conducting tube. These experiments mimic what occurs in the human body; e.g., in the physiology of blood flow through veins, cerebral spinal fluid flow through the craniospinal system, and to some extent, air flow through the respiratory system. I wrote up some of this research as my BE (Hons) thesis, which was subsequently published in the Journal of Fluids and Structures (see Accomplishments/Publications).

I was contracted to convert my BSc (Hons) thesis project into a commercial software package. My trigonometric algorithms analysed the shapes of mineral formations, which were used for mapping prospective gold deposits in Western Australia. I wrote the program in Visual C++ on Microsoft Windows using an object-oriented methodology. Crucial to leading this project was my ability to liaise with geological scientists, taking into account human-computer interaction when designing the visual interface. I managed the planning through weekly progress meetings and documented the final product with a user manual. The scientific merit of this project is published in the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences (see Accomplishments/Publications).
