Hayden is a competent technical expert and joy to work with. Hayden completed over 1700 WOs for DSM5 in 2021. He became an SME on one a critical piece of equipment and the go to technician for repair and troubleshooting. Hayden had also successfully trained co-workers to correctly and successfully maintain the equipment. Hayden has my highest recommendation and I hope to work with him again.

Working under an NSF-funded study that tested the role parasite mating systems have in impacting the evolution of parasite life cycle complexity. I have been involved in molecular lab work which includes DNA extractions, primer redesigning, and PCR. In the spring, we will be doing an extensive amount of field work dissecting host species for helminths parasites, and field-collection of host species (catfish, crayfish, leeches, and other invertebrates) for helminths parasites. Conducted fish population surveys, collected museum specimens from a variety of mountain streams and lakes, setting up fishing weirs for the salmon run at the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, and helped out with the decades long habitat restoration project for Muddy Creek in southern Wyoming. Acquired important knowledge on operating and repairing boats, electrofishing backpacks, and a variety of fishing nets and traps. Assisted with water snake mark-recapture research focused on the post-delisting monitoring of the Concho water snake and snake parasite dispersal. I conducted field surveys along the Concho and Colorado Rivers in west-central Texas as well as Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area in northeast Texas. Major duties of the job included the catching and processing of snakes and snake parasites, collection of data and entry, and genetic sample preparation. Processing of snakes required measuring mass, length, sex, reproductive status, tissue sample collection, parasite removal and preservation, collection site description and pit-tagging prior to release. Capture of snakes required recording GPS and site description data. Canoeing, hiking, wading to and from locations were a daily requirement and occasional camping required to access more remote locations. Interactions with private landowners were necessary as well maintaining a positive attitude no matter how humid and hot conditions were. Show less

Assisted with the laboratory section of the Fall 2014 Limnology class. As a teacher’s assistant, I was required to identify aquatic organisms and perform water quality sampling to students. I was also required to teach to small groups about proper sampling and water quality techniques.

While at Peru State College, I conducted my undergraduate research on trematode parasite diversity in gar (Lepisosteus sp.) in the Big Thicket National Preserve in southeast Texas, as part of National Science Foundation Award 1253129 (Survey and Inventory of Fish Parasites in the Big Thicket National Preserve). The work included under this grant required a lot of hours in the field collect fish from gill nets, dip nets, minnow traps, and seine nets. I currently have a manuscript about a new trematode species found within gar (Lepisosteus spp.) that has been submitted and waiting for a peer review. This long-term project aims to document new and previously described species of parasites in fishes all found outside and within the Big Thicket National Preserve. My research while I was on the NSF grant required strenuous hours in the lab as well. Identification of organisms using a compound microscope was required and I would have to be able to identify organisms ranging from all kinds of parasites. Under the NSF grant, I completed my undergraduate thesis working on the redescription of the trematode species. With my thesis required a lot of data management and use of statistics to provide legitimate data. Show less
