My internship project began with studying bacteria-surfactant interactions in Personal Care products. I worked on characterization methods for monitoring surfactant absorption to bacteria cell membranes, before shifting my focus towards exploring the low-pH formulation space for hygiene bars. I worked with the Science and Technology team and other Unilever scientists to further understand the biology and chemistry behind effective products, enabling the company to better meet consumer needs and preferences. I ran Design of Experiments (DoEs) on JMP to optimize costs and time, before creating a statistical model to predict factors of product success with the experimental data. The future applications for my project findings lie in the development of products for Unilever's hygiene brands like Dove and Lifebuoy. Show less

As a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program, I spent a total of two semesters researching the bacteriophage population. Throughout this period I performed isolations, purifications, and amplifications of new phages from environmental samples by using the specific bacterial host m. smeg, along with electron microscopy and DNA isolation/analysis. The goal of the program is to progress through a variety of microbiology techniques and eventually to complex genome annotation and bioinformatic analyses. Show less
