I have had the pleasure of working with Carmen at Cummings (where I have an office) and as a fellow School Committee member in Wakefield. Carmen has a gift in being able to talk with people directly, honestly, and handle thorny issues with grace. Her compassion is matched by her strong analytical skills and commitment in consistently making a positive difference. At Cummings, I needed her assistance in handling a situation where we encountered some fantastic employees and those that needed assistance in their productivity. She handled the situation confidentially and with apparent success as we have had all positive, productive experiences with employees since the conversation. She ensures the "human" is in HR, respecting each individual while making sure the organization is productive. Working with Carmen on the Wakefield School Committee was a pleasure. She encouraged open discussions about any topic and always kept focused on the children within the school district. We always left any discussion as friends and with a greater understanding of how we were making a positive difference within our community, which we both love. Carmen's analytical skills are extremely keen. She is able to consistently measure the value she contributes to organizations. She recognized when there was political strife within Wakefield about a prior Superintendent before others and then proceeded to lead the Committee, and the entire community, in hiring Joan Landers, an outstanding Superintendent who moved the district forward. She asked very tough questions about proposed budget expenditures and union needs during negotiations. She helped craft the ~$25 million budget for the school district each year. Consistent with her strong belief in education, Carmen continues to get professional education, keeping on the leading edge of HR. I am fortunate to know Carmen -- she is genuine, smart, and a great person to work with. In short, Carmen Urbonas is a positive, dedicated leader who gets results.
