Working in the dermatology clinic exposes me to the nuances of a medical office, how to work with different insurances, use the electronic medical record and interact with patients over the phone and in person.

I entered the clinic my first day in my scrubs and was immediately brought along to watch a homeless woman have an intake. That day, I learned how to take vital signs and how to probe the patients for clues about their condition that brought them to our sliding scale clinic. With many of our patients being homeless or in difficult home life situations, I not only helped with medical care but also assisted in showing them the food shelf and activities provided by the Church in which Hopelight is located. I have aided the physicians during their examinations by taking notes, helping with procedures, and providing a report after my initial questioning while taking vital signs. Oftentimes, the parents cannot afford day care for their children, so during the examination with the doctor, I will keep the child’s attention, keeping them calm, comfortable, and from being a distraction.

    • Clinical Aide
      • Jan 2019 - Jun 2019

Bringing patients to warm up and get ready for their appointment, I get a chance to chat with them about their families, hobbies, adventures and also find out how their pain is coming along and affecting their lives. The patients are often seen for weeks to months and several times a week, so I get the chance to know them pretty well and they get to know me. Through working at Anchor, I have seen how different providers interact with their patients and also been able to work on being comfortable bridging awkward topics with patients and giving people ease while nervous. As an aide, I help the therapists through their sessions by taking notes on the EMR, treating the patients with ultrasound/STIM, and setting up ice or heat for their comfort at the end of the visit. I have increased my ease with interacting with patients and learning how to increase their comfort level as well.

    • Undergraduate Researcher
      • May 2017 - May 2019

I had the opportunity to work in the Voeltz lab for two years, researching a newly discovered protein called MCTP2. I started by aiding my mentor in her work, while learning the introductory lab techniques and methods to approaching research, before proceeding to start my own project. Through attending lab meetings, I gained a more complete understanding of the different projects’ other members of the lab work on, and I learned how to present my own research material in a cohesive and professional manner. Gia challenged me constantly at round tables, pushing me to see beyond the current experiment I was working on, to think about the implications of every result I got, and to investigate the problems encountered. I found that the techniques that I learned in lab were extremely applicable to my upper division classes and I began to see the connections between the beginning research, for example, discovering the function of an unknown protein, and the medical community, this protein could have something to do at axon synapses.

    • Lifeguard
      • May 2013 - Jan 2017

I began lifeguarding when I was 16 as a Lifeguard 1 and was eventually promoted through the ranks of lifeguard 2, 3, and then became the youngest complex supervisor following my freshman year of college.

    • Complex Supervisor
      • May 2016 - Aug 2016

As complex supervisor, I was in charge of the maintenance, chemicals in the pool, other lifeguards, and patron satisfaction. I learned how to deal with intense situations by calming down unhappy guests and navigating disputes between lifeguards. In addition to guiding my other lifeguards in protecting the guests, teaching CPR and instructing the lifeguards on how to perform first aid, I also taught swim lessons, which provided me with a wide array of audiences with whom I needed to connect.
