As a Peer Support Specialist (PSS) I was required to be a flexible, trustworthy, organized and dependable. Making the connection to individuals with MH/SUD came easily to me as I am a Recovered Addict with 10 years of sobriety. I easily related with the consumers which lead to much success with their recovery as they trusted me to help them navigate the resources in the community and easily take my suggestions. For each client my role was similar but the way I engaged them differed. This caused me to be versatile with my interventions based upon the need and level of comprehension of the consumer. I helped consumers integrate into the community by teaching them to use the resources that were available. For each consumer we developed a specific plan by identifying their goals, triggers, natural supports and then tailoring a recovery plan (Person Centered Plan) designed specifically for their needs. In addition to my responsibilities as a PSS working with consumers with severe mental health/substance abuse challenges I also had to Network with other providers, community leaders, social activities/events, and stay up to date with changes in policy and procured to assure compliance with state regulations. I managed to build a Network over the years with other Healthcare professionals, Providers, Managed Care Organizations, Non-Profit Organizations, and Local Government entities all over the state of NC. Some of the administrative duties included progress notes, doing RAS scales, reauthorization of services, and documentation when making referrals for outside services. Training the companies employees was among my duties as well. I developed trainings in Progress note writing, WRAP, and Crisis Prevention techniques. Show less
