Founded a software development consultancy. Conceived, designed, and built software systems for various clients. Held client specification meetings, wrote proposals for software systems, communicated with clients throughout the development process, negotiated software deals and acquisitions. Managed software projects, timelines, and schedules. Developed technology strategy for early stage companies, designed products, ran product design and development meetings, conducted user interviews and research. A few of our successes: Airbnb: Conceived, designed, and built Tiny Doorman, an app for iOS and Android that provides an easy way for users to manage access to their buildings through dialup intercoms. The app and telcom backend have been in production for 6 years without any significant downtime. Over 400,000 people have walked through doors we've opened for them. Studio Dental: Built a web application for a multi-office dental practice with a mobile location. The application allowed patients to schedule appointments, see availability, and locate the various offices (including the mobile location) on a map. The application had a responsive design and supported desktop, tablet, and phone screen dimensions. It was maintained and improved for the 12 years it was in production and sustained an uptime of 99.999% while successfully booking over 100,000 appointments. Orro: Built the prototype firmware for a smart home light switch. Wrote the embedded code that interacted with various sensors (light, motion, proximity, etc.) over I2C and passed that data to an Android device. I wrote the Linux device drivers for the Android device to expose the sensor data to higher levels of the application. The company used the MVP to raise a multi-million dollar Series A. Habitry: Built a social network for a consumer healthcare startup. The product was an iOS app that created a coach led community for the formation of long term positive health, exercise, and weight loss habits. Show less

Designed and built multiprocessor firmware in Assembly, C, and C++ on ARM Cortex M0 and Cortex M3 processors. Invented components and patterns for our firmware which lowered worst case stack usage, reduced coupling, increased reliability, guaranteed delivery of interrupt messages, and ensured the system was always in the most power efficient state possible. Built an open source toolchain for our embedded systems, shortening compile times by 10x, dramatically improving workflow experience, and saving the company thousands of dollars per developer in subpar proprietary compilers. Designed and developed interprocessor communication protocols that reduced programming errors and increased productivity. Wrote C# programs to improve lab efficiency, interact with scientific instruments, and process experimental data. Built iOS apps and backends for data collection experiments. Apps worked offline and synced data when reconnected to the internet. Conducted an efficiency study of our chemistry lab. After implementing my findings, our experimental sample output increased by a factor of six. Increasing the sample size lead to higher confidence in our experiments, as well as a faster experimental loop and a happier, more confident, lab team. Ran weekly design meetings and code reviews. Mentored two interns, and an iOS developer. Show less

Designed, built, and maintained the infrastructure, backend, API, and frameworks for a media Q&A website chickrx.com. I also built the frontend, and helped design the UX. The site was in production from 2011 to 2015, and handled at least 600,000 unique visitors per month. Devised strategy and vision for the product and the company. Pitched to investors and raised $200,000 in a seed round. Conducted recruiting and interviews for technical candidates, managed and mentored a junior developer Designed and developed a web framework that combined code generation, automated testing, and a build system that allowed seamless code reuse between front and back end systems. It was a technical investment that saved the company thousands of hours of development time, facilitated fast product iteration, and reduced defects. Maintained the infrastructure and critical parts of the codebase after leaving the company until its acquisition in November 2013. Show less

Developed user interface components and backend architecture for a web based video surveillance application. Designed and authored network monitoring and notification services for video cameras, recording servers, and other infrastructure to provide in-application and out-of-band alerts to administrators about the status of the system. Lead developer of the excise tax calculator system used by every IRS excise tax auditor nationwide. The year I developed the project we didn’t have a single technical issue in production over multiple releases.
