By allocating resources, overcoming challenges, and designing new processes, policies, and procedures, I’ve been able to advance continuous improvement to workflows and patient flow through. I’ve also been heavily involved in recruiting and onboarding new staff. In fact, I coach, mentor, and guide the careers of 9 nurses, 2 social workers, a chaplain, and several home health aides who all work remotely and are spread across Livingston and Washtenaw counties. Under my stewardship, Arbor Hospice has enjoyed under 5% turnover in 3 years since I began in the role of Operations Manager. On top of engaging and retaining a team of top talent, I also maintain fiscal responsibility of budgets to order equipment and medications while simultaneously overseeing staff scheduling, payroll, timecards, and mileage reports. I meet weekly with an interdisciplinary team to discuss patient care and make decisions on patient eligibility based on a 6-month disease trajectory to make recommendations for further care or discharge, with the goal of improving patient comfort and optimizing patient and family outcomes. When COVID-19 hit, I ensured safety and quality standards, including working with staff through the vaccination process and liaising with supply chain leadership to guarantee the availability of necessary items (e.g., PPE).

I then, designed and implemented training activities for staff members that provided clinical and didactic instruction using various delivery methodologies to ensure material retention, promote leadership, and create positive learning opportunities. The overall goal was to be a patient advocate and ensure top-notch treatment and care. With that in mind, I sourced, hired, onboarded, and trained nursing staff by delivering comprehensive orientation, in-service training, and continuous education. On top of that, I reviewed and developed policies and procedures that ensured the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and services. My team and I met weekly to create a culture of excellence focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) with an emphasis on open communication.

One of the things I loved most about this role was that I was able to act as a primary nurse preceptor for new employees to facilitate the application of theory with practical experience and quality patient care. I further ensured quality patient care by maintaining stringent controls over inventory and purchased new medication, supplies, and durable medical equipment ensuring appropriate supplies to meet patient needs.
