Claremont was one of 50 semifinalists nationwide competing for the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize (GUEP), in a two-year competition to reduce energy usage in homes, schools, and municipal accounts in innovative, replicable, and scalable ways. The Claremont Energy Challenge (CEC) was Claremont's proposal for winning the GUEP. This was a year-long contract position. Designed and implemented CEC programs, with a primary goal of increasing Claremont's standing in the GUEP competition, as well as expanding Sustainable Claremont's capacity for community outreach. Specific tasks and accomplishments included: - Designing and implementing energy conservation curriculum, in the form of hands-on educational activities, for over 480 elementary school students - Facilitating revenue-sharing partnerships with for-profit organizations (digital tools for managing home energy use and an online solar marketplace) - Managing a door-to-door canvassing campaign and phone banking campaign - Organizing neighborhood "coffee talks" - Creating and presenting workshop curriculum for community groups and the public - Publicizing the effort through the website, email campaign, social media, print materials and advertising, yard signs, radio PSA's, and direct mail - Recruiting and managing a team of over 50 community volunteers and 6 student interns - Creating, requesting, and managing a program budget - Reporting strategy and progress to the Board of Directors - Facilitating collaboration with the City, community groups, school district, and local businesses - Responding to resident inquiries regarding CEC programs and resources Show less

Assisted Claremont in implementing its Sustainable City Plan (adopted 2008, revised 2013). Specific duties included: - Planning and executing the City's Annual Earth Day street fair. Includes creating publicity materials, coordinating staff and volunteers, contacting and organizing participating vendors, soliciting sponsorships, renting equipment, and obtaining special event and street closure permits from the City. - Writing the City's Annual Sustainability Report Card, which tracks the City's progress toward goals set out in the Sustainable City Plan. Includes gathering and analyzing data and collaboration with a number of utilities and City staff. - Converting all City streetlights from High Pressure Sodium to LED. Consolidated existing data and my own field research into an inventory of our existing streetlights, researched potential fixtures and financing options, collaborated with energy efficiency consultants, lighting experts, utilities, and various City and contract staff, and supervised a student intern who assisted with the project. - Organizing Claremont's participation in the 2015 CoolCalifornia Challenge. - Generating content for Sustainability pages on the City's website. - Preparing applications (including gathering data) for Claremont's participation in award programs such as the Georgetown University Energy Prize and Beacon Award Program. - Collaborating with a number of other sustainability-related programs and organizations, including Sustainable Claremont, the Claremont Colleges, the Claremont Home Energy Retrofit Project, the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, The Energy Network, Energy Upgrade California, the LA County PACE Program, Southern California Edison, and Southern California Gas Company. - Creating tow enforceable signage for parking spots next to electric vehicle charging stations. - Promptly and courteously responding to resident inquiries about Claremont's sustainability programs. I was asked to temporarily fill the Sustainability Coordinator position while Sustainable Claremont advertised for a new hire. Due to a conflict of interest, I could not hold this position simultaneously with my City position on an ongoing basis, but my knowledge of sustainability in Claremont helped to provide a smooth transition. Responsibilities included: - Staffing the Sustainability Resource Center: responding to public inquiries (phone, email, and in person), collecting and distributing informational materials, purchasing office materials. - Planning events, including the Annual Meeting (primary planning role) and Low-Water Landscape Expo (assistant planning role). - Facilitating monthly Board meetings: reserving the meeting space, preparing the agenda and other materials, attending meetings as a non-voting member. - Facilitating the hiring process for a new Sustainability Coordinator: creating job postings, receiving and tracking applications, creating a system for deciding which candidates to interview, scheduling interviews, interviewing candidates, notifying candidates of decisions, leading hiring committee meetings, and training the new hire. - Coordinating volunteers: Writing and posting job descriptions, interviewing and placing new volunteers, directly supervising volunteer interns. - Attending meetings with or giving presentations to other sustainability-related community groups or interested community members. - Generating monthly e-Newsletters and other email notices using MailChimp. - Maintaining general monthly accounting in QuickBooks. - Maintaining the organization's Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram profiles.
