I write this letter as a testament to the expertise, leadership, and inspiration that characterizes Ann Henson, whom I met in the winter of 2008. She was at that time the vice-president of curriculum and instruction at CompassLearning. Ann led a large and comprehensive team that covered each of the core subjects taught in the American school systems. After skillfully assembling that team, she began the task of elevating our product offering to the top of the industry. The differentiating quality of our product was its high level of engagement. Ann studied brain science to inform her strategy of achieving that end. In each and every script, she required elements that activated the brain in the right way, at the right time, during the user experience. The result was an offering of thousands of award winning learning activities. To this day, I am very proud to have been a part of that. Ann’s management style enabled each team member to achieve autonomy. She had an open-door policy and was always available to remove obstacles to success. Ann had a notable habit of closing her laptop during even an impromptu conversation, and dedicating her full attention to you. In multiple conversations, after Ann provided the direction I sought from her, she would pivot her message to share insights and empower me to navigate future situations. Using that tactic, she morphed from a supervisor to a mentor. In effect, not only was Ann grooming me to be autonomous, but to also develop the habits and mindset of a leader. The generosity of her time seemed endless. Ann Henson has had a huge impact on the professional I have become. I look forward having many opportunities to work with her in the future. Any organization Ann joins, will have secured a key component on the road to growing business.

Ann understands people. If you work with her or for her, like I did for 3 years, you’ll experience her ability to relate to her colleagues and build relationships that transcend the professional context. What some don’t know about Ann is that this same talent makes her a fantastic product developer because she understands children. Ann knows that if technology is not fun and interactive children will not use it and no learning will occur. Because of this, she equally values academic rigor and engagement. She pushes her teams to design user friendly experiences that are both challenging and fun for kids. Ann is truly a unique combination of an educator and a designer who believes in both the art and science of effective learning design.
