In 2015 we began a re-architecture of the stack to include isolated service layers to route access to the database through stateless HTTP APIs that were built by my team using Tornado (Python asynchronous framework). The Database stack was moved from Chef managment to ansible, new hardware was rotated in and old hardware recapitalized, and combinations of OS and Hardware tuning increased database performance 20x. A new backup process began being rolled out that would improve recovery time significantly and serve a cost reduction to the organization by a further 250k year over year in addition to the 250k savings by rolling off of legacy archiving systems.

The use of large computing clusters utilizing MPI was required and I ran the link between our group and the cluster maintained by the university, additionally determining the most cost-effective approach to using the high performance computing systems. I also traveled to several conferences in both the US and Europe to give talks on this research.
