Erica was my director at the Clarice Smith Center. At a state-funded organization such as this, there are quite a few levels of management. Even as a supervisor myself, I reported to my boss who reported to his boss who reported to Erica. Too often, being three tiers of hierarchy away from a person precludes much of a working relationship – but this was not the case with Erica. Our Marketing and Communications department included nine full-time employees responsible for a variety of disciplines, and Erica made a point to be involved in every facet. Further, she took an interest in the professional development of her staff. When I was hired at the Clarice Smith Center, I had no real career aspirations and was only working for a paycheck. But I was lucky to have strong leaders, and Erica in particular taught me to value excellent work and to stay driven. I would frequently ask her about her success in the arts world, and her encouragement set me on a path that I am still on today.

Motherhood is my favorite job. My toughest job, but also my most important job. Being a mother is knowing when to get involved, and when to step back, when to intervene and how to teach your children to stand up for themselves. Its advocacy and activism the art of letting go.
