Fiercely dedicated to being the voice for, and champion of, those most often disenfranchised: children with learning disabilities, and those mental and physical impairments. She is a powerful advocate for special needs children whose parents are seeking accommodations within the schools. The world could use a thousand more like Maria Blaeuer, lawyers with her knowledge, her commitment and her passion. She's wonderful.

I am pleased to recommend Ms. Maria Blaeuer. Ms. Blaeuer is a solo attorney whose primary area of practice is representing students with disabilities. Most of her clients are residents of the District of Columbia who cannot afford to pay for an attorney. She does not charge their clients a retainer. All of her profits are earned by winning due process hearings where the prevailing party obtains attorney’s fees under the fee shifting statute. I became acquainted with Ms. Blaeuer while employed at Brown & Associates, P.L.L.C.; a firm that represents children with special education needs. Her assigned caseload included over one hundred clients. These clients presented a wide variety of challenging issues that required competent advice and advocacy. One must be extremely well organized and have an extensive knowledge of special education practices and procedures to be successful. Ms. Blaeuer demonstrates excellent organizational skills and an in depth knowledge of applicable case law, statues and regulations. Mr. Blaeuer exhibits a collegial approach to her work. She is truly a team player who will not hesitate to work with any individual in the firm. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

I teach a graduate course, "Law, Ethics and Corporate Governance" and an undergraduate class, "Business Law" In Business Law students learn about how laws are created and enforced, including the regulatory process. We discuss the interplay of ethics and law, and the role of the state in economic activities. In the graduate course we discuss the meaning of corporate responsibility, the intersections of ethics and law, the role of fiduciaries, and what the application of whistleblower statutes and Sarbanes-Oxley mean to modern corporations. We also explore how various human and civil rights laws operate in the workplace and the importance of corporate culture. Both classes use a variety of case studies to strengthen students' ability to read and understand statutory and case law.

As a Staff Attorney, I work to support AJE's mission by representing individuals and encouraging community involvement in the policy creation process. Advocates for Justice and Education seeks to empower families, youth, and the community to be effective advocates to ensure that children and youth, particularly those who have special needs, receive access to appropriate education and health services. AJE serves families of Early Intervention-Aged Children (birth- age 3), School-Aged Children (ages 4 – 12) and Transition-Aged Youth (ages 13 – 26).
