I carried out research into novel attitude (orientation) estimation systems for high-acceleration, low-cost applications, such as control of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. This resulted in the development of a novel sensor which uses the polarisation of Low Frequency (LF) radio signals to determine its attitude (pitch, roll and yaw). I also undertook undergraduate-level teaching, leading small group supervisions for courses including Radio Frequency Electronics, Integrated Digital Electronics, Linear Circuits, Electrical Power and Electromagnetic Fields and Waves. In addition I led the re-design and practical teaching of the third year Embedded Systems Project. Ubisense provide Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) for applications including asset tracking and automation. I undertook hardware and PCB design, firmware/embedded software development and testing for a GPS-based location device intended to extend the existing ultra-wideband RTLS in some applications. AlertMe develop wireless, internet-enabled home security and energy monitoring systems. I was responsible for the integration of the AlertMe system with Google PowerMeter. Shortly after I left, following further development, AlertMe became Google's first device partner for PowerMeter. I also delivered a number of other projects, including a fair usage monitor, a system update email service and a network visualisation tool, using Python, PHP and MySQL throughout.
