Stu is by far the most passionate developer I have ever had the pleasure to work with. At Xedo Software, Stu is a member of the same team as me, and I am his Product Owner. Stu has helped me in more ways than I can count, he has taught me so much about how to develop quality products, and the bleeding edge technology we can use to create them. I cannot recommend Stuart enough to any other employer interested in him. He is incredibly knowledgeable, capable, and cares deeply about the world of development. If you want someone who truly understands how to build a great product, this is your man.

Richard Foster

I had the pleasure of working with Stu on the myBank Core banking project. In his role as Developer he was always very approachable and always had time to go through areas of concern. His work was always of a high quality and when issues were raised these were turned around very quickly. He also has a wealth of experience in design and made a valuable contribution to the look and feel of the final product. He got on easily with everyone on the team and made it a pleasant environment to work in. It would be a privilege to work alongside Stu again and I would have no reservation in recommending his services to others.

Typeform - set apart by its distinctive "one question at a time" format - is the gold standard of forms, surveys and lead generation. We focus on a "respondent first" approach to product delivery ensuring that the end user is always at the forefront of our decision making.I am currently the Engineering Manager for two of the core teams of Typeform:- Create: Core form creation and interface.- Respond: The Typeform shell and logic which renders the form itself.I line manage and coach all 11 engineers in both product teams. Despite the large number of direct reports I have a strong focus on the professional and interpersonal growth and development of each team member and try to align their goals with product incentives and initiatives. I create personal development workshops with each to ensure their long term development and use regular 1 to 1 meetings as checkins.Day to day I rely on the team expertise to help prioritise and deliver key aspects of the product and facilitate technical refinement sessions and meetings to ensure that work is understood and well coordinated. I work with other managers to understand the work required and set expectations around how the our core teams can support them. I also work directly with my PMs to ensure that deliverables are on track and ensure that proper technical investment continues during product development.Since my time here I have built two fully engaged teams who were previously struggling after a large staff turnover in 2021. I helped coordinated the migration of a core tracking provider saving the company ~€1.4M, managed the technical delivery of a high profile cookie consent project within the organisation and oversaw the delivery of a table stakes branding feature. Worked directly with the team to implement a standard for Design tokens, component structure and contribution guidelines. Also enabled the team to standup a reference website as a central resource for designers and engineers within FreeAgent.Managing and mentoring a team of 4 engineers delegating tasks and using the team expertise to help prioritise and deliver key aspects of the Design System. Voted the UK's #1 accounting software for small businesses, FreeAgent sorts out the mess and stress of managing your business finances. My team was responsible for the FreeAgent web application user interface. Worked with the team, stakeholders and executives to create, curate and delivered upon a strategy that improves how UI is developed and delivered at FreeAgent. This included working with Design and Engineering Leadership to get buy-in for large scale UI initiatives which were complimentary to the company strategy.Implemented a standardised modern UI component system and a complementary UI style guide. Drove adoption of the system across the product teams and looked to continuously improve it.As part of the team workflow I introduced fully responsive UI development in favour of "mobile optimised" views along with accessibility standards in code. Championed these standards across the business.Led and shipped a full application restyle, working with all facets of the business ranging from executives, sales, product teams, comms, to support.Outlined and ran a series of initiatives to remove and clean up legacy application UI.Led and managed large scale changes of the application UI which had grown a stigma of "to big to change", such as an initiative on how we show and list information in the application. Improved overall UI resilience by overseeing a project which introduced Visual Regression testing into the application.Worked with Product Designers and Project Managers to bridge the gap between design, development and the business to ensure the product vision is as good as it can be whilst maintaining technical standards and improving the user experience. Managing and mentoring a team of 4 engineers delegating tasks and using the team expertise to help prioritise and deliver key aspects of the UI. With a strong focus on each team members professional growth and development, ran PDP workshops, 1 to 1 mentoring. Show less

As the Front End Team Lead I'm responsible for building and maintaining a scalable, accessible, and user friendly front end. I'm currently managing 3 other front end developers with varying levels of experience. In my first year at Xedo, I've introduced pattern library driven development, along with SCSS and JS coding standards, this knowledge and drive has been infectious in the studio. I've introduced a new client side build pipeline which lints, tests and builds our assets. I use a UX focused development process with documented and shareable web components. This universal approach to client side development extends across the business as does the speed and quality of our code. I'm proud to say we are now focusing on developing fully thought through features as oppose to constantly re-imagining, refactoring, reworking old code. I am also working with our reporting teams to implement a UI agnostic approach to tracking to reduce the development overhead. I am also driving the UX approach to development, by listening to our users and customers and developing software that truly meets their needs rather than what we "imagine" they might be. In relation to this I was also heavily involved in planning, story and scenario mapping. Show less

I was the Lead Front End developer for Digital Customer On-boarding as part of the Digital Transformation programme at HSBC, striving to modernise technology within an ageing and stagnating monolith. I worked directly with our UX, Design team and other parts of the business, to iteratively develop new Account Opening, Personal Loans Credit Card and Mortgage applications. We focused on introducing modern web technologies and design methodologies to create intuitive applications and increase the companies dwindling application rate. By creating and demonstrating a suite of digital utilities and customer journeys to people in all parts of the business, the programme gained a lot of traction. When I joined the programme we were a team of four developing all applications and utilities; but when I left there were with dedicated development teams for each product in the programme, working together across the globe. The final products are being rolled out across the companies six key business areas and over 20 markets, revolutionising the way the company uses web technology. The code base went through several iterations, beginning with SCSS, requireJS, and the principles of atomic design, resulting in the final products being developed using ReactJS with Isomorphic JavaScript, POSTCSS with CSS modules. Developing a next generation proof of concept for customer facing single page HTML application. I was an invaluable member of the of the self organising scrum team. I worked closely with our product owner to guide the authoring, acceptance criteria and technical implementation of user stories, collaborated with the UX and design teams to bring cutting edge interactivity and delegated tasks to our other developers. We began by outlining our key design decisions to justified our approach and eventually would allow us to set new development trends within the business. These included a fresh approach to accessibility and business wide development standards. The development was performance led, and by using feature detection with progressive enhancement we delivered high quality features and aimed for a touch centric application that used the Angular framework. We were given our freedom to work out with the regular constraints set out by the business and very quickly became a leading team. As a result, we began setting the trend for future front end development and were required to present our ideas and findings to other parts of the business including high level management and stakeholders. Whilst at The Royal Bank of Scotland, I was able to educate on the theory of device agnostic development, allowing us not to be tied to the mantra of 'mobile, tablet, desktop'. This gave us the flexibility to support web enabled devices in the future. By settings standards such as OOCSS and OOJS we were able to develop a pattern library for our code such that it could be picked up by another team quickly and easily. Whilst initially we utilised the bootstrap grid, it became obvious that it was detrimental to the overall development speed. In the end we opted in favour of pattern based layouts. After a year of development and discovery, our proven concepts were handed to an internal team for production, and the final product is scheduled be customer facing early 2016. Show less

Our team developed and scoped modular responsive and adaptive components on behalf of the Avis/Budget Group. Optimising for narrow viewports and low power devices first, we worked very closely with UX and design teams to develop static HTML templates for integration into a Magnolia CMS. Developing and testing across a range of touch and pointer based devices, there was a large degree of prototyping which, combined with on going user testing, helped us deliver the best possible user experience. The fully responsive navigation and footer components combined with complex search results and the fully interactive single page booking process were the toughest challenges. Especially in a fully responsive context whilst maintaining the WCAG AA Accessibility standard. I worked with a team with three other developers on a project at Stink Digital. I was primarily tasked with the JavaScript experience but also undertook testing, accessibility and component structure tasks. I used raw JavaScript with UnderscoreJS, to create an enhanced experience on the site. Utilizing a device agnostic approach and using the principles of separation of concerns and progressive enhancement. Modernizr was used to feature test specific browser capabilities and deliver assets depending on the results. Appropriate image and interactive fallbacks (such as PNG for SVG) were implemented. Steps were taken to ensure that performance was optimal regardless of device but still deliver the best experience to the user. Assets were concatenated and minified using grunt, gzipped server side and delivered client side in minimal payloads. The park was initially constructed in 2003 using metal ramps, and was rebuilt in 2014 using concrete. The park still stands today and is the local "spot". Show less
