Joanna was a great addition to the team. She was enthusiastic and eager to learn, especially when juggling the design of two subassemblies. She was able to work collaboratively across multiple teams to coordinate the designs. Even though it was a challenging project, she always brought a positive energy and a great spirit!

I had the pleasure of working closely with Joanna on several projects at Gradient for nearly a year. During our time working together, I was frequently impressed by her skills as a mechanical engineer and the way she worked cross-functionally with me and other mechanical, thermal, and electrical engineers on our team. In our time working together, she was able to translate many of the preliminary conceptual designs I had developed into viable, manufacturable prototypes while effectively navigating frequently changing project requirements and incorporating design feedback from various stakeholders. She exhibited a strong knowledge of mechanical engineering and different manufacturing techniques, including machining, sheet metal bending, and injection molding processes, and was always eager to improve her knowledge in these areas. Joanna is a wonderful collaborator and I loved my experience working with her. I know she will be an asset wherever she works in the future.

At Cypre, I helped build the future of 3D cell culture by bringing to life 6 iterations of bioprinters from concept to early-stage production in just 9 short months, and ship to their first pharmaceutical client in 3 months. Our bioprinter helps our clients fast-track cancer drug therapy + make decisions that save them potentially billions of dollars down the pipeline. As a Mechanical Engineer, Project Manager, Quality Engineer, Designer, Coder + many other hats, I led team meetings + design reviews with engineering and management, and developed detailed project plans + product requirements to facilitate timely product builds. For our final iteration, I fabricated, developed + troubleshooted electromechanical and firmware components for 28 units, shipping 27 of those units to pharmaceutical clients. I cut low-volume manufacturing costs by 25% by negotiating with external suppliers (3D printing, urethane casting, CNC machining, sheet metal forming, anodising) + optimizing materials selection with senior engineers. I reduced unit assembly time from 1 day to several hours by establishing new procedures and protocols for assembly, quality control & shipping to track inventory, improve workflow and oversee distribution of products. As my senior design project for undergrad, I chose this project because of my interest in orthopedics + biomechanics. A large number of lower back problems are caused by degeneration of the intervertebral disc, that jelly-filled donut that sits between each of our vertebrae. There are plenty of animal models that study disc degeneration due to excessive loads or disease, but there aren't many that simulate daily loading on the human spine. Working with Dr. Iatridis at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, my team and I created a mechanical device that induces disc degeneration on a rat tail due to cyclic bending. I optimized methods of efficient mechanical loading onto a rat tail model through multiple prototypes + performed device functionality and system reliability tests on prototypes in preparation for in-vivo pilot studies.
