Joanna was a great addition to the team. She was enthusiastic and eager to learn, especially when juggling the design of two subassemblies. She was able to work collaboratively across multiple teams to coordinate the designs. Even though it was a challenging project, she always brought a positive energy and a great spirit!

Thomas Tolley

I had the pleasure of working closely with Joanna on several projects at Gradient for nearly a year. During our time working together, I was frequently impressed by her skills as a mechanical engineer and the way she worked cross-functionally with me and other mechanical, thermal, and electrical engineers on our team. In our time working together, she was able to translate many of the preliminary conceptual designs I had developed into viable, manufacturable prototypes while effectively navigating frequently changing project requirements and incorporating design feedback from various stakeholders. She exhibited a strong knowledge of mechanical engineering and different manufacturing techniques, including machining, sheet metal bending, and injection molding processes, and was always eager to improve her knowledge in these areas. Joanna is a wonderful collaborator and I loved my experience working with her. I know she will be an asset wherever she works in the future.

At Cypre, I helped build the future of 3D cell culture by bringing to life 6 iterations of bioprinters from concept to early-stage production in just 9 short months, and ship to their first pharmaceutical client in 3 months. Our bioprinter helps our clients fast-track cancer drug therapy + make decisions that save them potentially billions of dollars down the pipeline. As a Mechanical Engineer, Project Manager, Quality Engineer, Designer, Coder + many other hats, I led team meetings + design reviews with engineering and management, and developed detailed project plans + product requirements to facilitate timely product builds. For our final iteration, I fabricated, developed + troubleshooted electromechanical and firmware components for 28 units, shipping 27 of those units to pharmaceutical clients. I cut low-volume manufacturing costs by 25% by negotiating with external suppliers (3D printing, urethane casting, CNC machining, sheet metal forming, anodising) + optimizing materials selection with senior engineers. I reduced unit assembly time from 1 day to several hours by establishing new procedures and protocols for assembly, quality control & shipping to track inventory, improve workflow and oversee distribution of products. At the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute at San Francisco General Hospital, I worked on a wide range of novel orthopaedic technologies for medical device companies, surgeons + research institutions by building mechanical testing fixtures and executing ISO standard verification tests, preparing clients for FDA submissions and potential clinical use. For each of these testing setups, I built them entirely from scratch using primarily milling machine and other machine shop tools. Mechanical tests were performed on medical devices, sometimes in cadaveric specimens, in the MTS Bionix 858 (a servohydraulic testing system) along with an Optotrack Tracking System to track movement of test subjects in 3D space. Some projects to highlight: • Utilized MATLAB image processing techniques to create a non-invasive diagnosis of Compartment Pressure Syndrome • Performed pure moment bending tests and statistical analysis on a novel spinal implant • Created custom LabVIEW programs to measure displacement of hip implants with LVDT sensors • Conducted user research interview with a patient to design a custom orthotic glove • Evaluated ankle syndesmosis movement using MATLAB techniques SKILLS: • Mechanical Design • Prototyping • Verification Testing • User Research TOOLS: • Milling machine • Biomechanical Testing: MTS Bionix 858 Biomechanical Test System, Optotrack Tracking System • Design: SolidWorks, Mimics • Analysis: LabVIEW, MATLAB, Excel, SPSS Show less

As my senior design project for undergrad, I chose this project because of my interest in orthopedics + biomechanics. A large number of lower back problems are caused by degeneration of the intervertebral disc, that jelly-filled donut that sits between each of our vertebrae. There are plenty of animal models that study disc degeneration due to excessive loads or disease, but there aren't many that simulate daily loading on the human spine. Working with Dr. Iatridis at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, my team and I created a mechanical device that induces disc degeneration on a rat tail due to cyclic bending. I optimized methods of efficient mechanical loading onto a rat tail model through multiple prototypes + performed device functionality and system reliability tests on prototypes in preparation for in-vivo pilot studies.
