I’ve had the pleasure of working with Matthew for five years at the Royal Society. He has always been extremely helpful and has the ability to maintain his patience in the face of general ‘web-tech’ ignorance from those around him. He is innovative and pioneering in his approach to online media and content dissemination and enrichment. In addition, he has an immense knowledge of the publishing industry, which is matched with good communication skills, attention to detail, a sharp mind and great vision.

Matthew and I have worked on several large and important projects together and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is an active listener and learner and is flexible in his requirements, while keeping project objectives in sight. He pays close attention to detail but also manages to think from the high-level view as well. He has a wide-reaching knowledge of the industry; both of current practices, requirements and standards, as well as future developments and technology changes. I have worked with Matthew for over 2 years.

In this role I am responsible for all online projects and hosting. At present that involves launching a new journal, scoping the Drupal content-management platform, an archive-digitization project and assessing data-management strategies. As all of the work involves editorial, production and marketing staff, as well as external suppliers, a collaborative approach is necessary in which team building, stakeholder commitment and the allocation of resources are important for success. I make sure the project scope, plan, budget and risk assessment are clearly structured. As most of the work is centred around content management and is customer focused, quality assurance is paramount, as is the documentation of requirements and progress. I regularly present and report to my senior managers.Since beginning the role I have implemented BaseCamp as a project-management tool to monitor project tasks and milestones; however this will soon be extended to include time management, cost control and a project-reporting tool. I have no project-management qualifications, but look forward to learning more about structured project-management methodologies and hopefully will work towards PRINCE-II accreditation in the future.I am a member of the KBART phase II working group and our representative to the ORCID Initiative. I also participate in HighWire working groups on future technologies and am a keen STM contributor on twitter.

    • Production Manager
      • Aug 2006 - Mar 2010

I managed the journals production team – which consists of one Senior Production Editor and three Production Editors. I had overall responsibility for the quality and timeliness in the preparation, technical editing and production of journals and other publications, both print and electronic. As well as reviewing and monitoring the work (and cost-effectiveness) of (overseas) hosting, prepress and print suppliers, I set the journal publishing schedules and allocate optimum staff resources to meet them. I oversaw the development of quality-control/-assurance processes and defined written standards, including appropriate Service Level Agreements. I recommended and implemented revisions to processes and procedures, and I contributed to departmental strategy and budgeting, with responsibilities for production spending. I had primary responsibility for our online presence and overall e-strategy.In this role, I project-managed the transition of our >340 years (>65k articles) of content between hosting platforms. This entailed detailed content and supplier management as well as in-depth specification and requirement documentation. The hosted sites were re-launched in February 2009 with much improved functionality and content organization.

    • Manager, Journals Production (Physical Sciences)
      • Feb 2004 - Aug 2006

Conducted prepress review, testing and assessment - eventually outsourcing all journal content to an offshore supplier. Managed production for new journal - J R Soc Interface - in November 2004: sourcing typesetter, setting page style and templates and writing instructions to authors. (Interface was 'commended' in the 2005 ALPSP Awards, Best New Journal category.) Made production process paperless and rationalized page/colour charging, increasing revenue. Oversaw redesign of all journal covers for publishing rebrand. Recruitment of Production Editors and peer manager. Assisted in creation of Service Level Agreements.

    • Senior Production Editor (Physical Sciences)
      • Apr 2003 - Feb 2004

Continued responsibility for the online and print production of Proceedings A and Phil Trans A. Line-managed one Production Editor. Updated electronic content management to standardize file structure, file transfer and email system across journal portfolio. Involved in transfer of online content to new hosting supplier.

    • Production Editor (Physical Sciences)
      • Apr 2002 - Apr 2003

Responsible for the online and print production of Proceedings A and Phil Trans A - both monthly publications. I introduced electronic transfer and correction cycles, streamlined style and increased scheduling. This all led to the creation of an online bank of pre-issue-published articles instead of a post-acceptance bottleneck.
