Cadogan was a 30 person company specialising in asset management and new technology investment conferences, primarily aimed at a senior 'City' audience. Responsible for the administration of staff (marketing, sales, organisers, temporary researchers and hostesses), ensuring that deadlines were met and sales targets are achieved. The position included recruitment and contract negotiation with suppliers. Achievements: Lead pitches for new business; written proposals and face-to-face meetings. Set up a relational database so staff were able to deal effectively with customer queries. In the 6 weeks immediately after starting, recruited more participants than had ever previously been achieved a client event which was floundering. This turn-around meant that the activity's budget went from a significant loss to close to profitability. Converting contacts into sales or positive responses is one of my key skills: a later direct marketing campaign to America achieved a response rate of 7%, exceeding the target of 5%. Improved profitability, through initiatives such as adding more accountability to the documentation of expenses; and negotiating substantial discounts for repeat business with key suppliers. The owners of the business were unaware that of the common practice of commissions on venue bookings and I was able to secure this new revenue. Also instrumental in ensuring that pricing was adjusted to more realistically reflect the resources used, directly affecting the viability of smaller events. In consultation with staff, developed a guide to the critical tasks and completion dates for the effective management of events, stabilising what was a fairly ad hoc system. IIR was the Australian leader in the competitive commercial conferencing market. The work involved cold-calling professionals to develop a conference program of interest to that sector. Other research was conducted through the internet and industry journals. Once an interesting range of topics had been established, speakers would be invited and negotiated with as appropriate. An important part of the role was liasing with other staff, producing sales strategy plans and generating leads. Promoted to Senior Conference Manager 1999. Achievements: Consistently over-achieved performance criteria based on profitability, delegate feedback and timeliness in the market Awarded Conference Manager of the Year 1999 Chosen to develop a branded series of events based on the introduction of GST. Conference series met and surpassed performance measures.
