Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra Main activities and responsibilities: - Adaptation and development of ecotoxicological test protocols for assessment of lethal and sublethal (behaviour and fecundity) effects of plant protection products on Apis mellifera; - Laboratory ecotoxicological testing – acute and chronic oral exposure on adults, contact exposure on adults and chronic exposure on larvae - for pesticide risk assessment in Apis mellifera; - Assessment of Apis mellifera colony development in different types of landscape; - Development and application of protocols for assessment of different parameters (population, mortality, reserves, diet, pesticide presence, pests, diseases, queen presence and behaviour, forager activity, …) related with the development of Apis mellifera colonies; - Measurement of population and quantity of reserves via visual assessment, weighting and/or image analysis; - Collection and identification of pollen for diet evaluation of honey bee hives; - Honey bee waggle dance analysis via observation hive; - Monitoring of hive activity using video recording and specific software; - In-hive sample collection (bees, nectar, pollen, bee bread, honey and wax) for pesticide quantification; - Elaboration of inquiries for local agricultural and beekeeping practices; - Data analysis for development and improvement of risk assessment models for Apis mellifera.
