Dubuque, Iowa, United States My time with the Fountain of Youth Program has been nothing but gratifying. Work involving the elimination of barriers among adults experiencing difficult situations and setbacks in order to reduce generational poverty is a method I'll always back, for poverty is inextricably linked to the poor health conditions worldwide. Work involving the elimination of barriers among adults experiencing difficult situations and setbacks in order to reduce generational poverty is a method I'll always back, for poverty is inextricably linked to the poor health conditions worldwide. Being able to gain skills and knowledge of nonprofit management has been a priceless opportunity, especially in a program designed for individuals to feel welcomed, heard, challenged, and encouraged. I have grown even more passion for the reduction of health disparities through collaborative programming and holistic methods of care and feel fortunate to have been a part of an organization that values such practices. The community garden was started in this area to break down barriers leading to food insecurity in a food desert area of Waterloo, IA. Fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the garden are washed and weighed after harvest then immediately distributed for free to patients and community members with educational materials inside the clinic. The first year of a community garden required a great deal of planning and action. I led in the role of data collection, communication organization, grant writing, project outreach, and promotional design while also being able to get my hands dirty in the garden for much of the maintenance experience as well. A few of my experiences from the YMCA included: creating a "Frequent Yer" exercise accountability program, writing event press releases, learning YtheUSA brand requirements and designing event flyers, writing wellness and healthy living blogs, creating press releases, building an outdoor obstacle course, teaching a yoga class to the kids' day camp, and coaching a week-long basketball day camp. In addition to these experiences, I regularly attended marketing meetings, helping develop strategies to improve department marketing goals while also committing efforts to fundraising events.
