Erin Ferris, PhD

Dr. Francis Canedo is a passionate, hardworking, intrinsically motivated rockstar in higher education. Her drive and knowledge make her an outstanding advocate, educator and leader for students, colleagues, and administration. I have worked with Dr. Canedo for the last decade beginning when we were both faculty members teaching in the classroom. Throughout our working relationship we have served on numerous committees to promote student engagement, learning, and retention. Our professional relationship was fused into a strong commitment to our campus during the 2014 - 2016 academic years when we both served on Faculty Senate. Francis was the Faculty Senate President, while I was the Behavioral and Social Sciences representative and this partnership resulted in us leading the entire faculty to take a stand for the financial stability and campus climate for our institution. As Dean Canedo has transitioned to an administrative role, our professional relationship has continued as we both advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion on our rural, college campus. We continue to both be advisors for the Gay-Straight Alliance to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. Francis is resilient, determined, and will never back down when presented with an injustice until it has been righted. Her fiery pursuit of justice makes her a necessary asset to any higher education institution, company, or community. On a personal level, Francis is also my friend. A friend who uses those same professional qualities to fight for those she cares about. I am grateful to have Dr. Canedo in my corner in a professional manner, but even more so in my personal life. Dr. Francis Canedo is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime kind of person who will bring passion and life to any working community. She will fight for justice relentlessly and fuel the fires of those around her.

Summarizing the many talents and strengths of Francis is no easy feat. She is a firecracker inside and outside of the classroom. Not only is she an excellent teacher, but she is also a strong leader and advocate for her colleagues and her students. I have met few people with the level of communication skills and charisma that Fran possesses. She is definitely someone you would want on your team (and in your corner).

Set the academic scope of the Humanities division, delegated operational plans to appropriate faculty and staff, and monitored the progress to ensure that academic goals were met on time, within budget, and to optimal student satisfaction. Identified gaps in academic resources and established new offerings, better formats, and varied course formats that made student’s access to education easier. Introduced processes that streamlined the performance of the division and gave more attention to supporting the needs of students across their academic careers. Found potential shortcomings in administrative performance and led the rollout of division-wide improvement initiatives in areas of curriculum development, institutional strengthening, and faculty development. Managed the division’s budget so that expenditures were accurately tracked and spent on earmarked academic needs. Worked closely with students, faculty, and staff to understand their individual needs and tailored academic response that addressed concerns.
