Bio
Margret Aldrich
David is incredibly intelligent, dedicated, and forward-thinking. He also has a rare balance of two important qualities: He is full of smart ideas, plus has a keen ability to listen to and collaborate with others. His sharp, thoughtful writing and editing make any project better, and his good judgment is unmatched. (Not to mention he's a warm, well-liked straight-shooter and a pleasure to have in the office.) I'd work with David again in a second.
Liz Gardner
David is one of the smartest people I have ever worked with. He is a passionate writer and editor and he constantly brings intelligent story and packaging ideas to the table. David is not simply an idea guy; he does the work to tell a compelling story. I have a lot of respect for his commitment to the editorial craft. It was an honor to work alongside him and the METRO team.

Associate Editor / Digital Editor at Utne Reader
-
Aug 2010 - Jan 2012
As associate editor / digital editor my time at Utne Reader was split between the print version of the magazine and utne.com. I took part in the editorial process of choosing what items would appear in each issue, as well as editing those stories and writing original content when needed. Online, along with regularly blogging on topics from politics to religion to art, I created newsletters and built relationships with editors at other websites in order to highlight their content on utne.com in accordance with Utne Reader's mission to promote the best of the alternative and independent press. As digital editor I managed a major overhaul of utne.com, taking it from an out-of-date website to a functional one, comparable to others in our field both in functionality and aesthetics. I also managed all social media platforms. • Wrote profiles and short pieces included in the print version of Utne Reader. • Wrote and edited multiple blog posts each week. • Created connections with other editors and websites to promote the mission of Utne Reader on its website. • Created and edited emails that went out three times per week. • Led a major overhaul of utne.com, adding many features, both functional and aesthetic. • Edited articles to appear both in the print magazine and online. • Increased total visits and pageviews for utne.com by 25%, and doubled all social media followers. • Wrote cover lines for the print magazine. • Copy edited final proofs of articles published in the print magazine. • Full knowledge of Search Engine Optimization. • Created exhaustive employee manuals for working within the Content Management System (CMS) used to maintain the website. • Managed all online issues. • Created monthly reports on web trends and traffic for editor in chief and publisher, using Google Analytics. • Came up with design and wrote ads for utne.com that appear in the print magazine. • Gave presentations to ad staff about new functions of website.
