I had the pleasure of supervising Shahab Owlia's studies toward a Master of Applied Science degree at Carleton University. As part of this work, he developed an autonomous obstacle avoidance method for a fixed-wing UAV. He showed great initiative, and was highly self-motivated. Not only did he have a solid grasp of the required mathematics and engineering sciences, he was also very capable on the practical side, writing simulation code, and fitting a radio-controlled aircraft with an autopilot, tuning it and getting it flying well. In addition, he has very good written and oral communication skills. His thesis was very well written. Overall, he produced excellent work. I very much enjoyed working with him.
