If you're looking for dedication, resilience and achieving excellence in a project, look no farther than Nicolas. Nicolas was on the design team for the Illinois Chapter of the Engineers in Action Bridge Program while I was president of the chapter. If you haven't heard of our work, we partner with rural communities around the world that might lack access to healthcare, education, or economic prosperity due to an impassable river. Every school year, we are tasked with a new project. During the 2019-2020 school year, we were assigned to work with the community of Nkalaneni in Eswatini, Africa. The goal of our program is to design a footbridge specific to the survey data of the community, create construction, safety, and travel plans, and then actually travel to the community during the summer, and physically construct the footbridge with the community members. To say Nicolas was on the design team would be an understatement. Nicolas was the design team for our chapter. It was Nicolas' first year in our program, but his passion for the project would have suggested that he had been with the program for many more years. He was immediately drawn to the project and began to work tirelessly to design the footbridge for the community. At the beginning of the project, Nicolas had a few team members to work with, but due to the circumstances of that school year, many of our members were forced to leave the program to take care of personal matters, leaving Nicolas to solely work on the project. Our team was required to submit three review calls, which are thoroughly researched presentations of the general logistics, design, and construction plans for the bridge build. Our chapter's general inexperience led us to perform poorly on the first review call. Nicolas, new to the chapter, saw this area for growth in our organization, and took full advantage of it. He didn’t just create a design for the bridge. He created multiple designs. These designs were based on which construction approach we could potentially use, specifically around whether we would construct the bridge using a gravity anchor or a drum anchor. Nicolas presented the advantages and disadvantages of all of his designs. The national organization was blown away with our presentation, specifically our (Nicolas’) impressive approach to the design of the bridge. We continued forward with the review call process. Though many were discouraged that the bridge build would get postponed due to COVID-19, Nicolas pushed forward, knowing that regardless of the pandemic, the community would still need to cross over that river. He created an impressive final design, and delivered, along with the rest of the team, the best review calls in our chapter’s history during Review Call 2 and 3. Again, the national organization was very impressed with our dedication and thorough process during the review calls. Typically, summers yield many bridge builds for our organization, as chapters across America travel
