Bio
Alejandro F Frangi
I was supervisor of Sarunas during his Year 3 short research project. This project is the first occasion our EEE undergraduates have to be engaged in research and prepares them for their final MSc thesis. It is their first occasion to participate in the daily life of a research group. In our group, we prefer to focus these projects around our own real research topics and avoid purely academic problems that are disconnected from true scientific questions. Sarunas join our team and work on a very interesting project together with Aneurin Kennerley (who runs the pre-clinical MRI facility) and myself. The project was about developing a new MRI coil and involved designing and simulating a new RF coil, as well as building and testing it in an real 7T MRI scanner. Sarunas is extremelly well organized, has buckets of energy and initiative, is self-motivated and objective-driven. It is rare to find in a Y3 undegraduate the combination of intelectual depth and organizational discipline I found in him. While he is determined, inquisitive and ambitious both about the work he does and his own career plans, he also listens, ponders, and acts in a very mature way. I had very fruitful conversations with him ranging from technical details of his work all the way to career developmen and self-managent that I found both deep and enjoyable. It is no wonder that I was very keen to have him as a MSc student in our group when he expressed he was interested in this. Sarunas will make a great engineer and scientist, one that embodies the vision of the Sheffield Graduate!

Engineered solutions for multiple resource-heavy backend data processing pipelines that had previously been inoperative due to their strain on the API.Improved dependency (internal and external) management processes at various levels of complexity, bringing more transparency into the matter, reducing required management efforts and providing efficient ways to determine and debug issues that are of external nature.Researched and created container-based testing environments and pipelines, removing dependence on external service providers and associated expenses. This also enabled more advanced testing environments which could be configured in the exact same way as production environments.

Electric Engineer
-
Jun 2014 - Sep 2014
A summer internship at Greenstart UAB, Lithuania.Characterised, built and tested an IGBT-based power converter, running on PWM technology, chopping voltage from PV panels and making it suitable for resistive loads, such as electric heaters. Experience:- Designed electrical schematics and PCBs using DipTrace- Produced PCBs using only copper clad sheets, laser printer and ferric chloride for cheap in-lab rapid prototyping- Soldering both tiny SMD 0603 components and larger power components- Prepared all the required specifications (parts list, circuit/PCB diagrams, user‘s manual etc.) in both English and Lithuanian languages- Worked with high voltages (up to 300V), therefore got familiar with all required safety requirements- Had real hands-on experience mounting thin-film solar panels on a household’s roof (1.5 kW system), wiring the system myself- Additionally, troubleshot LiFePo4 type battery packs used in electric vehicles. Also, experience with various Battery Management System (BMS) types
