Unite to Light is a nonprofit dedicated to providing low-cost solar light and power to those without electricity across the globe. Our products are the lights people need to live and thrive. We focus on projects that help students study at night, equip midwives with the tools they need to save lives, offer help and hope to those suffering from natural disasters, and provide light and power to our neighbors experiencing homelessness so they are able to connect to vital services and information. Light by light we are changing the world.

This position is a summer fellowship opportunity to develop my professional skills and collaboration experience. I am working with Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling (TCISWR) to reduce and divert bear spray, propane, and isobutane containers in Teton County, Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Due to the influx of tourism in the parks, these canisters are used at a high volume and bear spray, specifically, is often purchased and not used at all. However, these substances must be disposed of as hazardous waste — a process that is expensive and requires infrastructure Teton County doesn’t currently have in place. I am investigating ways to increase rental and reuse programs in the community, promote outreach and education about responsible disposal, and research potential recycling technology that is compatible with the canisters.
