Having to be on call 24/7 should be a burden. But since I have the opportunity to help a great bands achieve their dream career, it is nothing but a pleasure. If you've never heard of Gangstagrass, allow me to tell you about them. Gangstagrass is a bluegrass/hip-hop Band who has won a truly dedicated large crowd of more than 100,000 Facebook fans thanks to a spellbinding and groundbreaking sound, billboard charting albums and their original Emmy-nominated theme song to the hit FX TV drama "Justified." www.gangstagrass.com Show less

You learn a lot about a band behind a desk, but nothing beats hitting the road with a bunch of seriously talented musicians. As Tour Manager, I had plenty of responsibilities. Most importantly, I made sure that the band arrived at each venue on time and that they were paid the amount specified in each unique show contract. Since the band does not travel with a sound engineer, I used my well-trained ear to make necessary adjustments in the mix with each venue's technical director. After every show, I was responsible for being a thorough and accurate accountant—take that, high school algebra teacher! No tour runs exactly as expected and I often had to think on my feet and make necessary changes to the band's daily schedule as needed. Despite each of these new tasks, the most valuable skill I learned was to never take "no" for an answer. Here's an example: when our banjo player needed a new bridge and the only music store in town was about to close, I negotiated with the owner to keep the store open for another ten minutes. I was not willing to put a band's ability to perform in jeopardy due to red tape and bureaucracy. Show less

Not your ordinary music blog...or maybe it is. This is a hobby, but it's a hobby with a purpose. I write a lot about every sort of music you can think of. I suppose it's for an audience, but it's also for me. In a way, my blog functions as a "music history rolodex" for which I can draw upon when necessary. Now, what does that mean? Well, let's say I meet a singer of a punk band after his or her show. I want to be able to reasonably predict what his or her favorite music is and be able to hold a conversation about it for as long as possible. Basically, I want to know more about any given genre than your average bear. This website may exist in cyberspace, but it has absolutely helped me forge meaningful connections in the real world. My writing isn't only in text. I also produce mini web documentaries, one of which has received over 120,000 views to date. Though in the beginning I started making them for myself, within months I landed gigs producing web videos for record labels such as Triple Crown Records and agencies such as Paradigm Agency, Pinnacle Entertainment and Skyline Music. ORG Music is a vinyl reissue label based out of Burbank, CA. It has been responsible for rereleasing many landmark titles on wax including Nirvana’s "Nevermind," "In Utero" and MTV Unplugged in New York," Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz To Come," The Replacements' "Don't Tell A Soul" and Mike Watt's "Hyphenated Man." I felt lucky to receive such valuable experience in the vinyl record business. As a marketing intern, I researched titles for potential vinyl reissues, developed and executed marketing campaign and represented the company in meetings with radio stations such as KVRX and television news stations (KVUE) in Austin, TX. Over SXSW 2012, I was responsible for organizing room and board for recording artists and label executives. On the music side of things, I managed booking and equipment rentals during the festival and even organized an impromptu showcase for newly signed recording artists The Toothaches and Yellow Red Sparks. In my last few months at ORG, I created documentary style promotional videos for the vinyl reissue of Teenage Fanclub's 1991 Album Bandwagonesque and original artist Yellow Red Sparks. It was a true honor to work with people whose names I recognized from certain liner notes. It goes without saying that Warner Bros. Records has a remarkable history. Every day I reminded myself that it was a privilege to be there. With every task given to me I felt inspired to knock people's socks off. So what did I do? I assisted the VP of Marketing Xavier Ramos, developed and executed marketing campaigns for such recording artists as the Flaming Lips, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold and The Belle Brigade and appeared in promotional videos/materials for The Flaming Lips, The Belle Brigade and My Chemical Romance. At a place like this, you learn that you are always representing the company—even when you aren't at the office. I kept that in my mind every time I made a phone call or introduced myself to someone in the industry. Show less

Okay, I was a phone solicitor. Don't hate me. I was a top, leading employee and personally raised thousands of dollars for the University of Texas. When I was unable to raise money, I was still able to keep people on the phone. I believe this position was crucial in my professional growth because it helped me master the concept of engaging with people professionally. Okay, I was a phone solicitor. Don't hate me. As a summer camp counselor I had the most important responsibility in the world and that was being responsible for the well-being and safety of other people's children and gaining the trust and confidence of their parents for the entire summer. It's a tough—but incredibly valuable—concept to wrap your head around when your 16.
