I independently lead the project aims to understand the evolution of host-pathogen interactions. The human pathogen Legionella pneumophila maintains the largest arsenal of effectors among all bacterial pathogens, with over 330 effector proteins translocated by translocation system. My specific focus in this project was to answer the question of how L. pneumophila was able to acquire and maintain such a large arsenal of effectors using a unique experimental evolution method that represents an exciting new direction for gene evolution modelling. • Initiated and piloted the research project supported by NSERC Discovery Grant. • Designed and conducted molecular biology and biochemistry experiment to understand the evolution of host-pathogen interactions. • Independently developed a unique experimental evolution method that represents an exciting new direction for gene evolution modelling. • Initiated and established the collaboration with other researchers from other universities such as Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. • Mentored 4 students including Masters and PhDs in their research projects. • Technical knowledge acquired: Cell culturing, Infectious Disease, human-pathogen interaction, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), Immunofluorescence, SAS Certified Base Programmer, SQL, Python.
