The roles of the two tragic women are interpreted by the well-known Cypriot soprano Katerina Mina. The orchestra is conducted by the Cypriot conductor Yiorgos Kountouris. Electra, Princess of Argos sings the recitative and aria “Oh, smania! oh Furie! - D' Oreste, d'Ajace” towards the end of Mozart’s opera Idomeneo. This is a highly dramatic point where Electra, who is in love with Idamantes, son of the King of Crete Idomeneo, is forced to abandon every hope of union with her beloved, since, after Neptune’s command, he is to marry Princess of Troy Ilia. In Haydn’s Scena di Berenice, Berenice, wife of the King of Macedonia Antigonus II Gonatas, who is in love with her husband’s son Demetrius is tormented by conflicting emotions. Both compositions aptly express the agitated psychological state of the two women. For details of the whole programme , please see the attached fliers. Soloists Kathryn Hannah (contralto), Clifford Lister (tenor) and Robert Evans (bass) are joined by the Marches Choir and Marches Sinfonia. The Requiem by Mozart was composed at the very end of his highly prolific, but tragically short life. The work is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest choral pieces of all time, containing great contrasts of expression, from the most subtle and beautiful turn of phrase as exemplified in the solo quartet ‘Recordare’ (with some wonderful professional soloists) to the equally captivating power of the thunderous ‘Dies Irae’. Also on the programme is Regina coeli, one of his most delightful early choral works, full of boundless energy, and the brilliant and evocative Flute Concerto in G, performed by flautist Chris Lacey. The concert provides an opportunity to enjoy a delightfully rich repertoire of great music with some sparkling talent in what promises to be an evening to remember. Show less
