I led the BHP Billiton Group Productivity Project for BHP Billiton, reporting to the Group Executive for Health, Safety, the Environment, Marketing and Technology. With a small, central team we designed and implemented the common language, metrics and framework around improved Productivity, in the areas of Equipment, People, Supply, Capital and Marketing. A critical component was the determination of the quantum of free cash flow improvement that could be gained through improved productivity. The Project had a strong change management component, and included internal (to Management and to senior employees) and external (mainly to shareholders) reporting.By December 2016 the Group had delivered ~US11bn of cost and volume productivity free cash flow improvements. As global VP Mineral Resource Development, I led some 25 senior professionals in Geoscience, Mine Engineering, Business Planning, Brownfields Exploration and Geometallurgical Engineering, providing Group leadership in these areas. We initiated and executed a number of technology projects in resource definition, in resource evaluation, in mine engineering and in geometallurgy. In this role, and in previous roles in BHP, I led some 25 comprehensive capital project reviews, across multiple commodities, geographies and investment phases.During this period we were intimately involved with the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) and with the Australian Stock Exchange, in advising them on updating the listings rules for Natural Resource companies.
