What I took from this position: I started working at this company as a second job in my junior year of college. With little to no experience in this industry, I was able to learn a multitude of things. Not only was I able to come out of my shell, I was able to learn how to connect with people from all walks of life, gain valuable leadership experience as a trainer and shift-lead, as well as grow within the company and gain a year of fine dining experience. With three restaurants operating in the same facility, I was skilled in every department and many came to me for guidance and direction. My time at this company made me appreciate this industry, the people that work to provide exceptional customer service, and most importantly, sharpened my skill of paying attention to detail. Primary objectives of this position: - Managed a team of 4-6 employees to ensure all duties are performed accurately - Directed multiple stations, employees, and services to ensure adherence to food safety protocols - Organized shift schedules and job rotations - Assigned shift responsibilities and duties - Trained, development, and mentored new employees to ensure high quality customer service - Resolved customer complaints and employee concerns - Collaborated with customers, hotel staff, and event planners - Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, organizational know-how, excellent people skills, and problem-solving abilities Show less

The College of Liberal and Applied Arts Applied Skills Internship has a unique format that lets students add an internship to their résumé without having to commit to working off campus. While earning class credit in their major, students will work with corporate leaders and local business mentors to solve a real-life business problem currently faced by a national corporation. In this internship, students will research and propose solutions, culminating in a boardroom competition for corporate recognition and cash prizes. The internship strives to validate the workplace readiness of liberal arts graduates, helping students objectively demonstrate their professional skills to potential employers." Key components of the program include: - A sponsoring company identifies a business problem that it currently faces. -Students analyze the problem and propose solutions to the corporation’s leadership. -An instructor from each institution guides students through the process. -Seasoned business executives (mentors), recruited by each institution, assess student skills and program deliverables and verify whether a student is equipped to function effectively in the contemporary workplace. My project: Turner Ramirez Architects gathered creative and insightful students to assist with opening a second office location in San Antonio. The company wanted to have students analyze issues that may arise with opening the second office. My method to solving this was analyzing the statistical data surrounding the economy of architects in San Antonio, the culture and architectural history in San Antonio, and what Turner & Ramirez Architects would bring to the city. What I took from this internship: I learned how to navigate statistical data and interpret graphs and charts. Moreover, I was able to culminate the information and present it in an informative way.

As exaggerated as it sounds, I was struggling to find a purpose for staying in college. A work-study position I had randomly applied for became the catalyst for my work in mental health advocacy on campus and participating in education for diversity, equity and inclusion by assisting in events geared to the mission of the department. Veronica Beavers, Director of Multicultural Affairs, was a role model when it came to using my platform to speak up for what is right. She encouraged every idea I had, sometimes spending hours together collaborating on events and ideas. I was able to gain valuable leadership experience, exceptional customer service skills, and collaborate with like-minded individuals to focus on cross-cultural interactions on our campus.
