Investigating the dynamic behavior of materials using novel measuring principles likeSplit-Hopkinson methods to achieve fast loading rates in combination with fast infraredtemperature measurements. Aiming to separate adiabatic heating effects, a.k.a thermalsoftening, from strain-rate dependent stiffening in polymers.

Master Thesis - Direct Impact Tension Bar for Testing at Intermediate Strain-Rate
-
Jul 2018 - May 2019
'' A Direct Impact Tension Bar is developed for intermediate strain rate testing to bridge the gap between servo-hydraulic universal testing machines and the classical Split-Hopkinson Tension Bar. While the servo-hydraulic testing machines work well up to strain rates of 10 /s, and classical Split-Hopkinson Tension Bar perform well for strain rates above 500 /s, testing in the intermediate strain rate regime of approx. 100 /s has traditionally been difficult. In my work, I have investigated possible concepts for realizing a direct tension bar, which is similar to the already known direct pressure Hopkinson bars in so far as that no input bar is present. I have conducted several parameter studies using LS-Dyna for finding an optimal design, including analytical solutions for the time evolution of strain rate and stress. A prototype version of 40 m long bar with 16 ms of usable experimental pulse duration has been built and in satisfactory agreement with explicit Finite Element Simulations. ''

Quasi.-static and dynamic tension experiments of additively manufactured (AM) Al-Mg-Sc alloy Sacalmalloy are being investigated using High-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging coupled with a modified Split-Hopkinson Tension bar and in-house QS testing device. The fast failure mechanisms were realized under ultra-fast X-Rays radiography captured by a High-speed camera at 2 million FPS. Quasi-static and dynamic tension/compression tests were performed at ID 19 of ESRF. Additively manufactured metal - Scalmalloy; Fiber reinforced composites - Basalt fiber; Brass, Polycarbonate, Pure Aluminium, Concrete and Ceramics were some of the materials investigated. The fast failure mechanisms were realized under ultra-fast X-Rays radiography captured by a High-speed camera at 2 million FPS.

"Experimental testing and modelling of materials at high strain-rates" The dynamic behavior of materials is present through a large number of applications such as impact loadings, blasting and detonation, modern production processing, brittle failure of solids and structures… In such cases the material behavior is no longer quasi-static and the dynamic behavior of the materials needs to be properly accounted for.
