I am researching wildlife trafficking networks by applying geographic profiling, connectivity analysis and graph theory to predict the most likely supply routes between poaching events and exit ports, in addition to crucial nodes where ivory is consolidated. Understanding these networks and predicting the criminal decision-making that shapes supply routes has the potential to improve the targeting of interventions, not just for elephant ivory but, by its extension, for other illegally traded commodities worldwide. I am an Independent Consultant advising on organised environmental crime, primarily wildlife trafficking. My previous research includes an investigation of new strategies for tackling cyber-enabled wildlife crime in the UK, the development of e-crime tools for law enforcement agencies in Southeast Asia as part of a DEFRA Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund collaboration between Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), a strategic review of the South African Development Community’s (SADC) Law Enforcement and Anti-Poaching (LEAP) strategy for USAID, and an economic analysis of illegal wildlife supply chains in Eastern and Southern Africa for Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC). Esperanza Verde (EV) is a wildlife rescue centre and conservation project in the Amazon Rainforest. EV gives wildlife confiscated from the illegal trade a second chance, and protects rainforest habitat. • Working from Peru and remotely from the UK, I play a key role in determining the focus and direction of the project. I source funding and expertise, manage staff and volunteers, conduct research, represent the organisation in interviews and on social media platforms, and work hands-on rehabilitating and releasing wildlife. • I coordinate development projects and advise on strategies, with consideration of local stakeholders, animal welfare, ecological impacts, potential biodiversity issues, and environmental policy. • I am Vice President of the International Association (EVI) and I established the UK Charity (Reg No. 1176480). I regularly liaise with EVI’s external partners and provide progress reports to sponsors. I have also independently sourced funding for several projects; including a grant from Lush Cosmetics to build rehabilitation enclosures to release native species back to their natural environment. CDC Group is a development finance institution investing in businesses across Africa and Asia. They aim to create jobs in some of the world’s poorest regions. Alongside my work at Esperanza Verde and prior to starting my MSc, I supported the investment team and arranged complex travel itineraries to remote regions in Africa. The team regularly visited some of the world’s most high-risk destinations; I facilitated and supported their travel from the London office. I carried out risk assessments and arranged every element of their travel. Although CDC’s focus was not wildlife conservation, their commitment to creating jobs for local people taught me that safeguarding local livelihoods is vital to the success and longevity of any venture.
