Operation Flinders in a South Australian non-for-profit foundation that aims to transform the lives of young people at-risk through their participation in our evidence-based outback intervention program, so they may grow as valued members of the community. In excess of 8000 young people have participated since the programs’ inception in 1991.Operation Flinders major service is to support young people at risk by providing an exercise that achieves the primary objective by placing participants in a remote outdoor environment where self-discipline, co-operation, teamwork and trust are intrinsic to positive program outcomes. For 8 days participants are placed in an environment that provides only for basic needs. They face challenges as individuals and as a team, with proven evaluated results.The Operation Flinders exercises are conducted in the northern Flinders Ranges, and teams operate independently and trek more than 100 kms over eight days. Participants are confronted with physical, emotional and psychological challenges in an isolated and unfamiliar environment. Activities undertaken include daily cross-country hikes, abseiling, team building activities, bush survival skills, navigation and first aid skills, and an understanding of Aboriginal culture and the history of the Flinders Ranges.
