Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland As part of an young and dynamic team, I contributed to the development and operations of an internal Container-as-a-Service platform hosting over 800 Kubernetes clusters worldwide, built mainly from open source software with custom components and optimizations. In an enterprise development ecosystem with multiple teams we followed a Scrum-inspired agile development workflow, all DevOps practices ("You build it, you run it") including on-call duty, and fully automated continuous integration and deployment. Personally, I mainly programmed in Go, and used a variety of infrastructure-as-code and build tools (Bazel, Helm, Kustomize, Ansible). I architected and coordinated a global-scale monitoring system for the geographically distributed Kubernetes platform based on Prometheus and Thanos. Other personal tasks included a system for automatic remediation of inconsistencies in customer-, billing-, and cluster-data, a web-based console for simple administration of customer clusters, and development and maintenance of various components including billing, log shipping, alerting, and customer-facing and internal APIs. At the Distributed and Operating Systems group (formerly Complex and Distributed IT-Systems), I worked on various industrial research projects in the areas of reliable distributed systems, IoT infrastructures, and data processing and analysis. In these projects we worked with large companies from the telecommunications industry. For my thesis, I designed and implemented a self-healing cloud platform that detects behavioral anomalies in virtualized services and automatically initiates counter-measures. The platform is based on OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph, and is deployed with Kolla, Kubespray, Ansible, and Heat. Data collection and data stream processing is implemented in Go, Python, and Java. Unsupervised and semi-supervised machine learning techniques allow the system to continuously learn and improve its decisions - an approach now known as "AIOps". At the university I was also responsible for practical exercises and exams for multiple courses, including "Cloud Computing", "Distributed Systems", and "Operating Complex IT-Systems". I designed the exercises to teach students modern cloud computing technologies and get hands-on experience using public cloud platforms. Show less
