The primary focus was to assist schools with their school property projects and the processes surrounding this. This included advice on what to spend government money on and what to plan for. I also wrote submissions for funding to the Ministry Head Office, on behalf of schools, for upgrades to their infrastructure in such cases where, for eg, a special needs student has enrolled or the school is requesting a major redevelopment. This involves studying the case files and reporting on the specific needs to the school and costs involved.

The role initially was to assist more experienced teachers during their PE and sports lessons. As time went by, I was given my own classes to teach and plan lessons for. At times I was also called upon to help out in classroom settings (often in maths and English lessons) which were a nice change and something I really enjoyed. As I gained more experience, I found my ability to communicate and relate to the students greatly increase. Because of this, I found planning classes and formulating strategy around my teaching methods became easier. The foundation of our job was working on the Sector Service Desk. This was a forum that employees from tertiary education organisations all throughout New Zealand would look to for answers, assistance and advice on a number of different educational matters. There was a number of Information Systems which our division of the Ministry looked after. It was always a case of continuously learning about the systems and helping make them better. In my time in this role, I became the Subject Matter Expert of the National Student Index for our team. As well as being in charge of maintaining data integrity and dealing with second level queries on this application, I was also called on to assist our developers with areas/advice for system upgrades and as a trainer of new staff.

The primary objectives of this role were to increase participation in school and club cricket, improve retention of current players and volunteers and to improve the overall experience for everyone involved in the game. The nature of the job meant that we really had to sell our product. The role greatly improved my leadership skills and also the ability to work independently, while at the same time, increasing the value I place on teamwork and responsibility. It has helped me ‘think on my feet’ and has taught me to be prepared for all situations. Whilst working in this role, I obtained a Level 1 cricket coaching certificate.
