My main interest is Genetics where my research interest are directed to.

I was the first Saudi female to be appointed as the Head of a Service in KFSH&RC.I am Head of Ophthalmology service since 1997 at King Faisal Specialist Hospital as the First Female. KFSH&RC is a world leading healthcare Tertiary system that specializes in Robotics, Transplants; Oncology; Cardiology and 12 other surgical specialties. With over 8000 employees from 63 different nationalities; we deliver the best quality care. I supervised 6 consultants; a Senior optometrist & an Orthoptist under the department of Surgery. I also supervised 29 employees under clinical services. These 2 divisions had the over all functions of seeing 17-19,000 patients per year as an Outpatient; procedures; lasers; day surgery & admissions. The ophthalmology service was the largest service of surgery with the highest number of research; publication & educational activities.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia appointed on Friday Jan 11'2013; 30 women to the Shura Council in a historical move, allowing women for the first time to be part of the kingdom’s formal advisory body accounting for 20% of the members. The new appointees were chosen based on their academic and administrative achievements. Dr Selwa Al Hazzaa; Professor of Ophthalmology; College of Medicine; Alfaisal University; Acting Chair; Dept. of Ophthalmology; Surgery and Senior Clinical Scientist & Consultant in Genetics; Research Center of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center; was one of the 30 females chosen to the body of the Consultative Council who reports directly to the King of Saudi Arabia.

As Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at JHU where previously I had concluded 3 years of fellowship; I was deeply involved in engaging the Wilmer Ophthalmologists & JHH staff in the Medical Care of the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia where private visits of many Physicians were needed at KFSH&RC. After a certain period of time & as the Senior Advisor to the previous Minister of Health I was advised to set up a an International Collaboration with Wilmer Institute & Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I also gave Medical lectures to the staff of JHH. I overlooked the 2 existing chairs in the name of the late King Fahad in Research & Oncology.

It's main aim was bridging relations between Saudi Arabia & United States. A total of 23 cultural events were executed during the 4 year period. One of the highlights was identifying the personal pilot of late King Abdulaziz & Vetrans that attended the Quincy & Murphy gathering of late King Abdulaziz & President Roosevelt.
