I am currently working as an industrial Mitacs-funded post-doctoral fellow with the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Intrinsik Environmental Sciences Inc. My work is focussed on developing improved approaches for the assessment of health risks surrounding transportation infrastructure. Specifically, I am researching the health impacts of transportation-related projects, policies, and programs through the use of the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) paradigm. • Environmental Health Research Intern
      • 2015 - 2015

As part of this Environmental Health Research Internship I worked on an international systematic review of transportation-related Health Impact Assessments that we aim to publish in the peer-reviewed literature. • PhD Student
      • Jan 2011 - Dec 2013

Thesis: Role and Regulation of the Exchange Factor GEF-H1 in Tubular Epithelial Cells. My PhD thesis presented a cogent literature review on Rho family GTPases and their activators and effectors, as well as 2 of my first-authored papers. As the senior-most graduate student in the lab, I have authored (first author) 4 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and have 8 publications overall. I presented my work at 2 international and 2 local conferences, as well as numerous seminars and lab meetings. I have taught concepts and techniques to 7 different graduate, co-op, project, and summer students. I was also involved in installing, maintaining and creating standard operating protocols for equipments. I organized and implemented use of sign-up sheets and equipment cleaning days to maintain equipment in optimal working condition. Technical Laboratory Skills: Western Blotting, Immunoprecipitation, Immunofluorescence, Cell culturing, Cell Imaging (Wound Healing assays, Confocal and DIC Microscopy), Functional Cellular assays, Flow cytometry, ELISA, PAGE, Cloning, Bacterial cultures, Rho and GEF activation assays, Agarose gel electrophoresis, Biotinylation, Densitometry, Mass spectrometry Computer applications: MS Office Suite Mac and Windows OS Statistical analysis (GraphPad Prism, STATA, SPSS) Reference Managers (Endnote, Refworks) Cell Imaging (Zen, InVivo) Show less

    • Student Member- Research Steering Committee
      • Jan 2011 - Sep 2011

As the only student member of the St. Michael’s Hospital Research Steering Committee, I provided input via presentations to the Vice-President of Research and other committee heads about student perspectives and needs for new directions of research at St. Michael’s Hospital. I also contributed to the development of a Research Action Plan to guide the direction of research at the Institute

    • Research Technician
      • Jan 2008 - Dec 2010

I managed my own research projects, namely, Tumour necrosis factor-α and depolarization-induced activation of the RhoA pathway and downstream effects on permeability on the kidney epithelium. This involved designing and performing experiments, conducting literature searches, critically analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts for publication. I also presented data at Lab meetings and conferences, as well trained and taught lab techniques to all new students.I have expertise in many techniques, including Western Blotting, Immunoprecipitation, Immunofluorescence, Cell culturing, Cell Imaging, Flow cytometry, Cloning, Bacterial cultures and Rho and GEF activation assays. Further, I maintained all specialized lab equipment, including troubleshooting of operational problems. • Research Student (Volunteer)
      • Sep 2007 - Dec 2007

Investigated role of the Extracellular Signal Regulated Kinase pathway in paracellular permeability in kidney tubular cells using various experimental techniques

    • Summer Research Student
      • May 2007 - Aug 2007

I was accepted into the St. Michael’s Hospital Summer Student Program with a scholarship. My project required the use of various experimental techniques to gain further insight into pathological mechanisms underlying tubulointerstitial inflammation. I also presented data on Cell Stress initiated signalling in kidney tubular epithelium in Summer Student seminars and St. Michael's Hospital Research poster day.
