In my multiple decades across various roles in the workforce the single best manager I’ve ever worked under was Michael Dalto. In one of our first meetings Dalto told me that it was his job to take any stress and problems off my plate so I, the subordinate, would be able to complete my duties smoothly. The months that followed proved that this was not just big talk but a strategy and empathy style that I saw drastically improve how I felt about the position I was in. I have never felt so well represented or supported by a supervisor. Now, years later, when I find myself considering how to best be a leader in any number of spaces I reflect on this strategy. That is something I am deeply grateful for which has made me both a better worker and leader.
