Oliver and I have been working on an Amsterdam Data Science research project over the past year. I provided advice and recommendations, while he built a framework to measure and visualize 'topic change' in a large corpus of news texts. I very much enjoyed our meetings. Oliver communicated very clearly, and provided insightful ideas. He was very motivated and determined to meet our goals and had new results to show at every single meeting. Our collaboration resulted in a paper that was accepted for presentation at a workshop.

I did a one year research project, under the guidance of Laura Hollink and Desmond Elliott, to detect changes in concepts over time from an annotated collection of news paper articles. With a dataset from a previous project, I : - defined the scope of the project - set my goal to write a publication which is to be presented at a conference - set a definition of concepts, build a space vector model and made many decisions and proposal to successfully represent a concept virtually with a temporal perspective to find changes over time - did all the data analysis (mostly using python & R), coding, and modeling (check: https://github.com/olibchr/conshift) - overcame many challenges in project planning, conceptual design and coding for a fast and correct representation of a concept as well as change detection - learned a lot about scientific research projects, small team work, tools and frameworks used in the scientific community, data analysis, some AI algorithms, python, programming for longer term projects, keeping track of progress, to-dos and pain points of the research throughout the whole year. - and, most important, had a lot of fun and a great time at the CWI! In a newly founded business unit, we were introducing a new analytics software to the German, Austrian & Swiss market. The analytics software is a game changer for large factories, because it uses machine live data to predict maintenance and quality to reduce down time and operational costs. With especially industrial companies in the focus, we followed a consultative sales approach. We would have meetings with clients to give general consultation and find opportunities that way for the predictive software. I was especially involved with one client in the consultative phase. Together with a colleague, I built an API between a connected car solution and IBM analytics servers, using the MQTT framework for messaging and industrial standard encryption and set it up on both ends. We showed the client that way that we have the capabilities to process large data amounts in real time and turn it into a business value, in this case performance tracking. I finished this project and left IBM to pursue a master in Computer Science. Show less
