* Contributed significant original input to research projects which resulted in the preparation of a new class of transition metal complexes with very large switchable second order non-linear optical responses* Improved synthetic routes and devised new synthetic pathways for the preparation of important organic ligands used in the research group* Prepared transition metal complexes with very large two-photon absorption cross-sections* 9 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals (Journal of the American Chemical Society, Inorganic Chemistry and Organometallics)

Visiting Guest Scientist as part of a collaboration with University of Manchester
-
Jun 2009 - Jul 2009
During the Summer months of 2007-2009 I worked at Caltech as part of a collaboration between Dr Ben Coe and Dr Bruce Brunschwig.Performed Stark (electroabsorption) measurements on transition metal complexes and organic compounds at The California Institute of Technology (Caltech). My academic collaborator was Dr Bruce Brunschwig (Director of the Molecular Materials Research Center). This required working under pressure and to tight deadlines in order to complete the work and significant liaison with people from different scientific backgrounds. During my time at Caltech I became an expert in using the Stark spectroscopy apparatus.

Project: Preparation of copper(I) complexes and investigation of their activation of dioxygenSupervisor: Professor Dr Siegfried SchindlerI designed and synthesised numerous polypyridyl ligands and their copper(I) complexes. The copper(I) complexes were prepared in a glove box.Further projects also looked at synthesising dicopper(II) complexes and investigating the magnetic interaction between the two metal centres.10 papers published in high impact peer reviewed journals
