Laid off because of impacts of the pandemic on our tourism-reliant advertising base. The Stowe Reporter acquired the News & Citizen in Morrisville, Vt., Oct. 1, 2015, giving us a total weekly circulation of more than 22,000. Since 2017, we had acquired the Shelburne News and The Citizen, which serves Charlotte and Hinesburg, and The Other Paper of South Burlington. Total circulation of those papers exceeds 33,000. In March 2020, when the pandemic hit, we folded the weekly Waterbury Record as a cost-saving measure. In addition, I was executive editor of the Shelburne News, The Other Paper in South Burlington, and The Citizen of Hinesburg/Charlotte, Vt., acquired in 2017 and 2018; my job is to bring them to the same quality standards as our Stowe-based papers. The Sentinel is a top-shelf community daily, with a long history of reporter development, enterprise and project reporting, and overall excellence. I joined the newspaper when I was 21, and 10 people worked in the newsroom. I was city editor by 24, then managing editor/news and then executive editor. When I left, the news staff numbered 33; we had added a Sunday edition, three weeklies, and many sections and topic pages. The Sentinel was also a vigorous defender of right-to-know laws, and frequently went to court on principle. The Sentinel was judged the best newspaper its size in New England. Show less
