Bio
Craig Trudell
Whitney possesses the skills and the smarts to make a name for herself in an ever-changing environment for media. She demonstrated exceptional ability to lead in an extremely challenging environment as editor in chief at The State News. During her tenure, the newspaper thrived in the face of a challenging fiscal environment and steadily built up the statenews.com brand. This was much to Whitney's credit -- she's one of the young, driven, web-savvy jounalists who "gets it." She proved as much during her two semesters as opinion editor, when she pushed the desk to expand on the use of live blogging to deliver crucial news to our readers in real-time, including during the 2008 presidential election. She showed a knack for reporting, designing, and telling stories through photography and multimedia -- she has all the tools. Finally, I can vouch for Whitney on a personal level, in addition to on a professional level. I can't think of an environment where she wouldn't be a great fit.
Omar Sofradzija
Whitney is an outstanding and visionary leader who perfectly understands the need to delegate authority without sacrificing control, and whose social and workplace tools are perfectly suited in executing that difficult balancing act. During her time leading The State News (amid the Great Recession) she faced fiscal and organizational challenges which are taught in no journalism classes, yet found smart ways to cut costs and reorganize the paper's structure while minimizing harm to staff and maintaining the quality of the news product. I believe Whitney is only going to get better as a leader and manager and have no doubt she will be an asset to whatever organization gives her an opportunity.
