Clients while freelancing include:• Crytek GmbH: delivered creative copy covering everything from inventing profile details of alien characters in the Crysis 2 video game to promotional material featuring the company’s innovative approach to stereoscopic 3D, and even collaborating with the legal team to write patents.• IPC Media: edited features for Wedding and Shooting Times magazines. One highlight includes introducing a consistent recipe style to the latter’s holiday food special.• The River Group: after working full-time for River, I was hired back as a freelancer, pitching, writing and/or editing news and features for a selection of lifestyle magazines. • WeightWatchers.co.uk: wrote articles and listicles adhering to a very particular house style. Worked with the commissioning editor to make minor edits where requested.Following this, I relocated to the US from the UK and took a career break while applying for my green card. Show less

Senior/Chief sub-editor

Jul 2006 - Dec 2009
After working as a copy-editor on the launch teams of DARE and Shape lifestyle and fashion magazines, I was promoted to a more senior position on Weight Watchers in 2008. Alongside this role, my former boss on DARE and Shape requested that I could be shared with her team to work on an additional four quarterly lifestyle titles. Following this, I then acted as the chief copy-editor on glossy food magazine Irresistible, while also continuing to work on Weight Watchers. Responsibilities included: • Conceiving, writing and editing news and both short and long-form features, demonstrating an engaging writing style and a keen eye for detail. • Deputising for the chief copy-editor by managing freelancers, production schedules, flatplans and house styles. I also wrote the style guide for DARE from scratch. • Working on several different projects at once, handling disparate styles and schedules. • Collaborating with both external brands and the sales team to produce advertorials targeted to each different readership, taking careful note of repeat clients’ style preferences to speed the sign-off process. • Assembling a network of industry contacts to source quotes and competition prizes. • Writing coverlines, heads, captions and web copy. • Reviewing reader and client feedback as a team to ensure our content stayed relevant. • Doing final reads, making amends to iris proofs and sending pages to repro. • Ensuring my titles were always 100% accurate, up-to-date and on-deadline. I started at the BBC as a freelance sub-editor on a new contract for the Daily Express, Daily Star and their associated magazines, proofing and making amends to their listings pages. As well as producing a comprehensive style guide, I was also trusted with a night shift that gave me total responsibility for editing the base pages that were then amended for each title and region by the rest of the team. I was promoted to full-time listings editor, responsible for amending digital programme guides to ensure they were always accurate and well written. Show less

Screenings editor/writer
-
Jan 2003 - Dec 2003
Wrote and edited copy covering the American and Milan film markets and the Cannes film festival. While at Cannes, I led a small team to produce a set of comprehensive film guides of 40–50 pages a day, which I then laid out, edited and sent to press. Produced and edited news, reviews and travel guides for all daily issues and market previews, often to very tight deadlines. I also represented the magazine at press events, screenings and parties, mixing with celebrities and industry professionals and securing quotes or interviews. Show less
