This is a governmental hospital. We are 10 Neonatologists & attend 14 beds of Neonatal Intensive Care. We have 2 consultants paediatricians with an interest in neonatology. Our hospital is a very busy one that has over 3000 births per year. Workload: My main duty is in the NICU, which is divided into 3 sections: the first is the ordinary care unit which is specialised in caring for non-invasive medical conditions like simple cases of neonatal jaundice, well preterm babies that need to gain weight, and previously sick babies that are getting ready for discharge. the second section is for intensive care and is fully equibbed with ventilators, CPAPs, BG anaylsis device, mobile radiology machine. the thrid section is for septic cases. I can safely say that I've seen quite an extensive number of cases of all kinds of neonatal medical and surgical conditions (pre & post operative) and also quite alot of syndromes. I've dealt with and treated babies of all maturity stages and birth weights with some very good outcomes, including babies as small as 700 grams. In addition I am also responsible for attending C-sections for resuscitation, and reviewing emergency neonatal cases that arrive in the A/E department. Once a week I do On-Calls, where I'm responsible for the general paediatrics A/E where almost all kinds of paediatric emergencies including acute sever asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, GE & severe dehydration, seizures, and of course fevers of all kinds, in addition to less common emergencies. I am also responsible for teaching my junior doctors & nurses the basics of neonatology including basics of disease processes, operating mechanical ventilation and other medical machinery, basic hand skills & calculations, all under the supervision of our consultants who also give us routine lectures on the most common conditions that we've met during the month.

This is a private medical facility that is specialized in neonatology & intensive care unit for pediatrics’. We are 9 pediatricians and we attend 6 beds of NICU & 2 beds for PICU & 2 beds for general pediatrics, plus a busy pediatrics outpatient clinic for both cold cases & emergencies, the clinic sees around 7K patients per year, operating 24/7. We don't have a Maternity and no deliveries take place in this hospital, most neonatal cases arrive by referral from other hospitals or by admission from the outpatient clinic. The hospital has 2 consultants. The Neonatal unit is divided into 2 areas, one for septic cases and the other for well cases. The unit is equipped with 2 ventilators & 4 CPAPs. The general ward is for admission of simple general pediatrics cases including pneumonia, GE, bronchiolitis, blood transfusions & others. My duties include caring for the neonatal unit, the general ward, supervising the nurses & operating the outpatient clinic where I see most patients and make a decision whether to give treatment, schedule follow up, admit or refer to consultant clinic. The workload is overwhelming - to put it mildly - but working with such a knowledgeable and experienced team is very rewarding.
